All About Pocket Knives

Hey guys, Gary and I were talking about bidding against one another and thought it might be a good idea to list our user names to keep from having bid wars. Maybe after several post theirs we could make a list in one single post? What ya'll think?

We did that for a while in BF's Schrade forum and it got to the point that you had to consult a list of 40 or 50 names before you could bid or risk offending someone. Some people have all the time to set there and watch ebay several hours per day. If you don’t have that kind of time, then you end up deferring all the choice knives to forum friends. I still defer to those I know, I just got tired of consulting a list every time I wanted to bid.

As far as I am concerned I think I would rather not know who everyone is and then everybody can bid what they are willing to pay.

That's a good point Dale.

Also, with eBay's new system, once you go over I think $200.00 they disguise the names anyway. I had forgotten about that when Tank and I communicated.

I agree with Dale on this one and since most of you have more money than I do I'm not much competition...

I also use software bidding and usually put my bid in when an item first comes out, Usually there are no bids when I enter the item number and my highest bid into my software. The software will bid for me and I have no idea if I might be bidding against someone. I spend enough time on the computor as it is and don't have the time to watch eBay. The software either bids at 6 seconds left or does nothing because the price went higher than I was willing to pay.

A collection of names is a REAL BAD idea as it can be and WILL be regarded as collusion on the part of AAPK by eBay and I don't think we want to go down that road.

If we do this, then point out counterfeit knives, what do you think this will do. I will continue to use my software and I'm sorry if I step on any toes, but I don't have time to watch auctions. Count me out, I have no desire nor the extra time for this activity, reverse shill bidding if you will think of it that way.

The concept is well meaning, so we don't "bid up" against one another, but in all practicality, it's probably not feasible.

We've done it on another member site, and it has worked well, although there aren't near the number of members we have here.

I'll keep my own list, and be mindful of those names I recognize. I have already had three such cases with folks here on this site (bidding on the same item.) If I recognize a bidders name now on an item of interest, I say "good luck" and pass it buy!

I know a few of the member's e-bay names, and try not to bid against them. But I'm sorry, if I REALLY want a knife and can afford it, I'll try my best to own it.

I am not here to defend ebay, nor the big sellers for that matter, but Hukk brings up a good point. The little guy seller who is trying to supplement his income, puts an item on ebay to get as much from it as he can. If we have a large group of knife collectors who work together to keep prices down, (that is how ebay would see it), not only do we hurt the little seller, but in the long run we hurt the value of our own collections.

PS- As far as I am concerned ebay has a lot of issues. They are definitely not there for the buyer & I think their policies show that. But that is a matter for another thread.

I don't get offended when I am outbid by a forum member. I'm with Dale, you get a list of 40 or 50 names to go through you kind of loose interest in bidding on something. I could care less if Dale, or Charlie, gmusic or youself bid against and/or outbid me IMHO everything on ebay is free game. Granted if I do notice a name off the top of my head is high bidder I'll back off, if I don't recognise it off the top of my head I'll go ahead and take a shot. I don't worry about being bid against/

Well it was just thought. I know several also and wont bid against them if they bid first.

I've been outbid by members here and I don't take it personally, they just wanted it more than I.

I remember Sunburst and I going against each other, we didn't know it at first, but it was funny and neither of us have hard feelings toward each other. It just turned out that he wanted a knife more than I and I wanted one more than he did based on how much we bid. As Dale mentioned non bidding will hurt the little guy. As I mentioned earlier, I see it as the opposite of shill bidding. If there is something I want, I will load a large bid in my software and bid that way. If I'm making knives and sheaths, eBay is a waste of time, let the software either win or loose.

i agree, bid to win. courtesy can be given on an auction you know one of your buds really wants. but i don't want to have to worry about who else might want it.

I'm glad most seem to agree on this, and concur 100% with Johnnie.

If I happen to recognize someone I know there first, I'll stay away........unless I really want it. I don't want to know anyone else's name, and will try to forget it unless I feel I have a personal relationship with them.

I recently met, and visited with another collector of my favorite maker, who said he supposed he'd now be competing with me on ebay. My answer was....UH-HUH !!

The df comes from a team I played for called DEADLY-FORCE in TRIBES. A super fun game I mite add.

Bulldog knives that I wanted and thought this guy has fantastic taste because he wants every knife I want... I'm a little slower than most folks and didn't realize it was the Hukk until later down the road but it was always fun and adventerous with him bidding...I agree with Hukk also that I use a bidding software that I set up to bid for me and if it goes over my price no big problem let that person have it, they must have wanted it more...

But now that I know Ken's ebay name I am going to bid on all those yellow beauty's and D'Holders he guns for....

This made me remember my first Boy Scout camping trip.

It was to be a week long and my mom told me to put on clean undies each day. So being a good scout that I was I did what she said and when I got home I had 6 undies on. I just added one each day.

This one's all your's if you want it Johnnie. I can't think of a reply, except that collecting yellow knives is a big improvement over the skid mark collection.

I meet my very best friend in the knife world Galvanic1882 by bidding against each other on knives. Now we check with each other. In fact he felt bad about it and gave me the knife we bid against on. Now hows that for a REAL friend. Mike Losicco is one find person.

I met Mike recently at a show where I bought a fine vintage knife. The seller put it in a paper bank envelope to protect it. I took it out to show another friend, and the knife shot out of the envelope, right over my hand, onto the floor.

Two days later a package arrived from Mike, containing two cloth jewelers rolls. I'm going to another show tomorrow, and one of those is going with me.

He's on his way to Florida now, so let's wish him 1 or 3 good ones !
