Anyone know the technique for using the blade w/no stud can opener?

I had not seen the thread on different styles of can openers (aka tin openers). Excellent informative posts & pictures by Olde Cutler. Well worth a read.

Be careful using them. when many of the older openers were made the cans were made of tin, not steel like modern cans, so they were much softer. Thanks

This is not true. Old "tin" cans were made of steel, not tin, they were just tin plated for corrosion resistance. Tin itself is too soft for making cans or "tins". Even many old copper cooking pots were tinned to prevent copper corrosion getting into food.

I would only try this on a beater knife, not a pristine Keen Kutter, Challenge, etc. Just my 2¢.

Mine's a well-worn user so I'll probably give it a try. I like to have at least a little experience before I might need to use it for real.
I've opened plenty of cans with various knife can openers and most are surprisingly effective if your technique is decent.

They still tin copper pots. Tin is very expensive to use in a wholesale manner, anyway. It is still used in cast bullets to a minor degree, and (maybe?) solder? Seems like I read once that most of our tin came from Bolivia? The original phrase may have been "tinned can," not "tin can." Can is a contraction of the original word cannister.

100% correct Cal. I haven't seen many modern tinned copper pots but I am sure they still do it on some. Maybe I don't shop where they have them but I do have some antique ones. Yep, most common low temperature solder is a lead/tin alloy and available with different lead-tin ratios. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin while brass is an alloy of copper and zinc.
