All About Pocket Knives

Good Morning All. Thank you for adding me to AAPK
I found a large Fixed blade knife but there are no markings on it. I did however find the numbers 2278 on the leather sheath that came with it. Was wondering what those numbers mean and are they a reference to the manufacturer of the knife.

Sorry, I can't help with any info on your knife.
Somebody may come along who can figure it out based on your description, but most folks will ask for pictures (we love pics), especially any stamping, to help with the ID.

With old sheath knives that have been carried and used I often find they are in a replacement sheath, so that may or may not be an indicator of what knife you have. As Steve said, a photo is invaluable in identifying a knife. OH

Morning ,Welcome to AAPK, was having coffee at our First Cup Diner and chatting there, now on second cup myself and building steam.
You have shown a nice old fixed knife, don’t know much about it, more into slip joint. Is there a tang stamp anywhere or makers mark ? That’s usually helpful.
Someone will be along and figure it out, the knowledge here is amazing! As is the willingness to share. Stick around, post some stuff, have fun.
Am a newbie here myself ,want to say don’t be afraid to jump in, going to make mistakes,post something somewhere and maybe get a old timer correct you . Can tell you one thing though,I’ve learned more here atAAPK forum in 6/7 months than I learned on my own in 20 years of accumulating.

Oh yeah Ripster,
To answer you question, No there is no state anywhere on the knife. I’ve handle a decent amount of knives and this one seems to be very well built.

State =stamp

This looks like it could possibly be a Theater Made knife to me; one made by soldiers at wartime. You may be able to get an answer as to what this blade used to be, sometimes they're cut down bayonets and such. Hope this helps, to AAPK!

There is a member here who knows a lot about fixed blades and i hope he will post. To me the sheath looks production and correct for this knife so it might not have been made by cutting down a bayonet or larger blade. Country of origin is important to ID the manufacturer. It could be USA, Germany or Britain.

I agree that it could be a WWII Theater made knife. Very well done at that. The pommel has a poured lead plug holding it together. The lines of the sheath look much like an early KA-BAR but does have some repair stitching. What is the blade length and overall length?

Hi Petra! I can't help with identifying your knife, but I can say it's sure a beauty! Be patient and some knowledgeable folks will be along to help you in your quest to know what you have! Oh, to AAPK, you're gonna have a bunch of fun here!

The blade is 6 inches long and total length is 10 inches

Definitely a home made knife. Whether made here or in theater is hard to say but it is not a factory item. The work is a little more sophisticated than most but not all theater knives and many knives called theater knives were not made in theater, many made after the war. Very nicely made for sure.
