What shape should a handle be for this hatchet?

Hello Everyone!
I want to put a handle in this shingle hatchet.
(Isn't this used for putting up wood shingles?)
.
I want to put a handle in it that would have the correct shape for the period of the head.
I have seen several of these with handles but I am not sure if the shape of the handle was correct on those.
Does it look like a hammer handle (flat end) or a hatchet handle (with a toe)?
.
I don't have a clue.....
That is why I am reaching out to y'all.
.
Here she is.....

No problem! ::handshake::
I've got about a dozen of them hanging in my shop but have never actually used one.
They were hard to pass up at the flea markets.

Yep, they are just plain cool looking!

I also thought the "measuring holes" in the blade are just plain cool too!

On some of my hatchets they have a scoring blade where the holes are, but some don't. ::shrug::

Now that is cool.....

I guess that is for marking instead of using a pencil.....

COOL.

Could someone explain or show how the measuring holes are used?

I have an idea how the "measuring holes" would work BUT... somebody may know the "OFFICIAL" way....

My idea is that the "hammer" part is where you rest the next shingle to place it at a measured point.
The HOLE would either be "eyeballed" to show the distance from the lower shingle edge OR there would be a pin or bolt in the hole that would be HOOKED over the lower shingle.

NOW, are you confused?.....
