All About Pocket Knives

I am new to the forum and hope I have attached a collection of my knife collection. I had not thought I was a collector but have carried knives all my life. Mostly I carried a knife until I found another I liked and then just dropped the old one in my sock drawer. My Dad passed away a couple years ago and I found a bunch of knives in his safe. I think most of them were pawned to him over the years. He usually carried a knife but most of these I don't recognize. Some of these I bought from Frank Buster back in the 80s when I visited his antique shop.
The brands here are Case,Fightin Rooster,Frank Buster Solingen,Eye Brand( I think),Buck,Kissing Crane, Queen, Boker and Buck Creek.

I hope this picture comes through this is my first post. I have lots of question that I will try and post one or two at a time in the near future.

You have a nice collection going US! I won't likely be able to answer many of your questions, but don't be shy, lots of guys here are VERY knowledgeable collectors or just enthusiasts, and I'm sure they'll have answers for you. Also, to AAPK, you're gonna like it here!

Welcome to AAPK! Looks like you’re a collector to me.

Since you’re soliciting comments, one I will make is thatt I shudder every time I see knives being stored in one of those knife rolls. I’ve had bad experience with them as have some others. Recommend you do,a search here for “knife rolls” to see some comments and examples of knives damaged from storing in them. Here’s a starter for example viewtopic.php?f=35&t=64714

And then there's the other side of the coin. I have 95% of my accumulation in those folders, many for 10 years or more and have only had a problem with one knife. Am I just lucky? I hope I'm not tempting fate here.

I enjoyed looking at your knives.

I am using those knife folders also and I have had no problem with them.
I used knife rolls previously and I never had a problem with them either, although I didn't use them for very long.
I switched because the knife rolls were very inconvenient.

It's great that you have your dads knives.

This storage folder was actually one of my questions. So if I don't use that what should I use that is better ? I have several Celluloid handle knives and have been reading since joining here about potential damage. Should those knives be stored separately in some type of open case/container?

Definitely! They may be fine and may never go bad, but it never hurts to be cautious. Especially with some of the names you mentioned. Fightin' Rooster and Buck Creek in celluloid I would be wary of.

Those 2 glitter gold cell stockmans would be the first I would segregate from the others. Then possibly those pearl-ish looking ones (if they aren't pearl).

German knives of that era in celluloid are notorious out-gassers.

As to storage for the others, that's up to you. Some people have shelves or display cases. I use wooden machinist tool chests to store mine, and printers trays to display.

You have some fine looking knives I can't comment on the storage folders, I use tool chest and cigar boxes myself.
Glen gave you some real good advice on the German celluloid. I seen and heard of some real horror stories. Glen being a knife mechanic extraordinaire has probably repaired a lot of these knives.

Oh geez, I missed the Christmas tree handles! Get those out of there also!

Like Glenn has said, there are endless methods of storage, depending on the preferences and budget of the collector. Each have their pros and cons.

Shelves or displays can be hung on walls, free standing or placed on tables. Depending on the size of your collection, do you have room for them? Some can be pricey.

My preferred storage is Sackups knife rolls. https://www.sackups.com/store/category/knives They’re great for storing and protecting their contents, but they don’t allow for quick display of your collection. You have to individually remove the knives to,see them, rather than just unroll the roll. Plus they’re not cheap. Shop around for the best deal.

I have some knives that aren’t pristine mint condition examples needing protection from scratches etc, which I just store in a box. They can bump around and scratch each other but they’re older, worn EDCs already so a few more dings aren’t going to be noticeable or hurt their value.

I use all of the above. I also have some knife rolls like the one you have. I use them to transport knives, like to a show or similar for a few days. But as soon as they’re back home they return to other storage. I see folks here say they’ve used them for years and never had a problem. I said the same thing - until I did. I have knives damaged that can’t be restored. Every time I see them it’s a painful reminder that I don’t wish anyone to experience.
