All About Pocket Knives

Got this today. It's built like a freaking TANK!

I do not own any Cold Steel knives and I'm not sure why. Most I've looked at are well built and appear to be designed to take on rugged tasks. I've seriously considered adding a Cold Steel Lawman to my pile but just never got around to it. I like the looks of your knife. What model is it ?

I've owned a few and I've never been disappointed. My favorite was a model called the ClipMate that I owned in the early 1990's. Great knife with a super grippy handle and I wish I still had it.

All I have now is a Spike and a Lucky and they are both well made knives.

The AD 10 weighs about an ounce more.

I have a few of them and they're as good as anything out there.

CS produced some of my favorite knives. Though some people collect them, CS products are clearly designed to be used. Recently sold, it will be interesting to see if the new management will maintain the innovation and quality of the past.

I didn't know they were recently sold. Any idea who bought them?

I have about 20 Cold Steels. I like them all except for the Spartan. It was to big for my hand.

GSM Outdoors [Good Sportsman Marketing LLC] is the new owner. Lynn Thompson said he would remain active with the company, perhaps as an idea man. I believe they will be moving more of the production to mainland China. Obviously GSM is going to try and increase profits as fewer knives will evidently be made in places like Taiwan China, Japan, etc. The newest products tend to be very low cost, possibly well made but I can't tell. The designs are not to my taste. But it is early and time will tell.

S35VN, should take an good edge and retain it for quite a few cuts.

I currently only own 2 C/S knives, and both are well-made solid knives. They are both the "Tai*Pan model, 1 in Grivory, the other in steel. I ordered the steel model first, and while I was waiting for it to arrive I saw a C/S video of the Grivory model in action puncturing multiple layers of cardboard, and bending to a 90 degree angle while clamped in a vise without snapping, so I took a shot for $10. and wasn't disappointed in the least. Both edges on the steel model came sharpened, and I also saw a video of this model slicing through hanging rope, and then slicing through a hanging side-of-beef, and as soon as I ran my thumb across the blades I certainly understood how they accomplished this demonstration. I've been watching for a C/S "Spike" for nearly 2 years, but they're ALWAYS sold out! Grivory!Steel!

I also own a couple of Cold Steel's less expensive Finn Wolf knives with Scandi grinds. Both are tough and well designed

I recently had an epiphany. Tantos are no longer "stupid". If you're doing heavy cutting, and that involves any kind of puncturing (as when I was recently breaking up a bunch of boxes), tantos are the best blade pattern to have. I have a CRKT M16-10KZ, as well as a really beat-up Emerson Mini CQC-7. The Emerson, for sure, is now going into rotation. But, the handle is way too slender on the CRKT. I've got my eyes on a bigger Voyager for a work knife. Currently, I've got my eyes on a 5" model that seems pretty affordable.

Agreed. A Tanto was my EDC for a couple of years, and it only relinquished that role when I found that its handles tended to dig into my hip.

I own an Urban Edge, and I'm happy with it. The Recon Tanto has been on my want list for a few years, too. Hopefully they will maintain their standards under the new ownership.

Marco, I don't know if the Tai Pan is still in production but I remember reading multiple reviews that highly praised the pattern.

I have an old book from the 80's on security work/PSD Body Guard work and there is a photo of the body guard opening his coat and he had a Beretta 92 and Cold Steel Tanto on his belt. That guy was COOL! When I was a kid the original Cold Steel Tanto was the "COOL" blade to have. I still have one and when I handle it... well, I feel like I am still a "cool" guy, ready for action ... just like Steven Segal and Chuck Norris! OK... maybe not that cool... But still a great knife after all these years

Well, my first two are incoming. The Voyager L is a little beat up. I hope I can clean up the somewhat banged up serrations without ruining them. I paid $55 for the pair, hoping I can easily refurb the Voyager. It will be my work knife, but I bet I'm gonna like the Mini Tuff Lite more. I've wanted one of those since I was a teenager. Cold Steels really hold their value, especially Voyagers.

Thanks Garry. I too read about the Tai*Pan design being highly praised. I REALLY, REALLY wanted the model with a satin blade, but they were NEVER in stock, so I settled for the all-black, and of course, no sooner did it arrive than I started finding the satin model all over the place. It's currently on the C/S website in VG-10 steel for US$300., or in CPM 3V steel for $380., but I can't justify that kind of expenditure simply for a blade color, specially since I already own one. They have 3 LARGE folders that I've had on my "Wishlist" for ages, the 13" "Hold-out", 13" "Luzon", and the 13" "Counter-point",(yes, I like BIG knives!)and as soon as I've cleared up some previous commitments I'll be ordering those. The website states that the company is in Irving, Texas and it seems GSM has their fingers in many pies, so I sure hope they continue producing C/S knives in the same or better quality as they have to this point. Only time will tell!
