That's a complex dovetail for sure Scott, is that a knife slot on the side?

The Carpenter wanted more surface area to get a really strong joint. I have never seen that but I like it. The wood looks very much like Cherry to me; Cherry is harder than my head and is heavy and dense. (it will also choke you sanding it)
