All About Pocket Knives

Hey everyone....

I just fished this Primble Old Timer out of the bay and I was wondering if y'all know.....

Did Schrade ever make any Old Timers for Primble that had any covers other than Delrin?

In the pic below....
I have my Delrin covered Primble Old Timers 935 (same as the 8OT) on top.
Then in the lower part of the pic, the wood (?) covered 935 Primble Old Timer.

The work on the cover is really nice. It looks like a factory job or if someone else put the covers on, they sure did a good job.
The shield is NICELY inletted and in the correct location.


What do y'all think?

I don't know anything about the wooden covers but I sold an original 1959-62 Primble 8 OT stockman a year or two ago to a member here. And...it had bone covers.

Oh... bone covers. Hmmmmmmmm............

I probably won't know for sure until I get it in hand, but it sure would be nice if it had bone covers.

There is a definite "grain" to the cover material.

I think that's bone Mike. You can still see the sawcuts. I've seen similar bone before, pieces with lots of haversian canals and a grain that looked identical to wood. Nice find!!

I agree with Eric. Good job, Mike!

I've seen several knives on ebay described by the owners as having wooden handles that were actually bone. I think at times the bad descriptions turn folks off and the knife is ignored. Several times I've purchased old Queens that supposedly had wooden handles that were obviously faded Winterbottom bone.
I believe Mike has a winner!

The bone 935s are much rarer than the regular bone 8OTs. You found a good one.

And after I see the Primbles in your bottom pic, I can see how coarse the haversian canals are in the bone (just like mine!) ..... NICE!!

The really clean one with the etch (same knife is shown in its box) is the one Cal is talking about. I bought that from him a couple years ago. They don't come any cleaner that that one. I haven't seen another with an etch.

This bone 8OT flew under the radar and I wound up buying it for $25. You can see how it also has that pronounced woodgrain look.

A few years ago I sent that turd to Eric and this is what he sent back -

That is the most beautiful "polished turd" I have ever seen!

I guess my next one to watch for will be a bone 8OT.

Kaleb fixed that up for me. I had that knife in the back of a drawer for years before I decided to do something with it. Before and after pics:

He does good work. These are the 3OT 'clones' he made for me, also from wrecked knives I bought. The one in the back actually looks pretty close to the real deal. Up front is a Cut Co frame with a much larger sheepfoot, worked springs and liners and I was able to find a certified legal whale tooth for the covers. It's a little over the top compared to what a normal person might do with a thrashed Washington jack they found along the way.

Pro Tip: Send him a knife you want him to work on now. He is so busy his turnaround time is something like 4-5 months, BUT - once you send him a knife you secure your place in line. Over the next couple of months any new knives you send him will be on the same timetable as that first knife. If you send a knife now, all your knives will be done at the same time and you'll have them back before Spring. I just remembered I bought a couple of broken switchblades. Time to send them over to join the knives I already have in line!
