SCHRADE LB7 4 PIN STAGLON?

I am new to this forum and am looking forward to participating in the discussions. After viewing some of the threads concerning the USA made Uncle Henry LB7, I hope that I'm not sticking my neck too far with this post. I have been doing searches for an USA Uncle Henry LB7 with 4 pin Staglon handles at a lot of various sites including new and past completed sales, reference sites, collector sites and so on. I have come to the non professional conclusion that the 4 pin Staglon handle LB7 ended production in 1980 making this model very hard to come by. I have a 1980 Schrade Uncle Henry Limited Ed. 2 knife set called the "Dixie Collection" which has the LB7 and a 144UH fixed blade. I have just chased another 1980 issued set called the Gold Rush or California Gold Rush which also has the LB7 4 pin Staglon. In both cases the knife blades have an etch on them. I haven't come across any LB7s that don't have an etch on the blade. I understand that in 1978 Schrade came out with a two knife set commemorating the southern states that also included this LB7 model with an estimated production of 10,000 sets. I don't follow the new Schrade China model lines and haven't seen a new model LB7 with these characteristics. Any input from you folks about this subject would be appreciated.

As I posted on another forum for you, the four pin LB-7s are not hard to find. There is one or more on Ebay every day, including today.

Funny I looked on eBay and there was no 4 pin Staglon listed under Schrade LB7 search. This may be a silly question but do you know what Staglon is?

The version in Staglon® is an LB-8, not an LB-7. I have not researched the LB-8s so I don't know if any are 4 pin or not. There is no such thing as a Staglon® LB-7. LB-7s have a stabilized 'wood' handle.

There WERE LB-7's with staglon handles made from '78 to '80, all with 4 pins (3 handle, 1 center). I don't think there were any standalones made, only knives that came in sets or special editions, and all with etches of some sort. The OP is correct in that they came in the Dixie sets as well as the Old Faithfull companion sets and Gold Rush set. Those all came out between 1978 and 1980. I think they switched to the LB-8 stamps after 1980, or during that year. Here's a pic of a Gold Rush knife with tang stamp:
Gold Rush LB7.jpg
Davehaasco I believe the Old Faithfull sets were the ones that came out in 1978.

Amazing! I sure never knew that! I would have called them LB-8s with LB-7 blades in them. Maybe just a matter of semantics. But if LB-8s weren't being sold yet, then LB-7s is what they were!

So... keep your eyes peeled, Dave; one like you are looking for will show up sometime on the Bay, after falling out of its proper nest! Good luck!

This here old dude sitting in my chair is STILL learning!

As a side note to this topic, the earliest LB8s had 3 pin Staglon handles and LB7 stamps. The one in the pic is serial number 8741. If you go to Bladeforums there's a lot of LB7/8 info in a mile long thread with details (like this) provided by Codger.

Thanks, Jason; that is what I alluded to in my post above. I think that I have seen them, so the OP may get his wish.

Thanks everyone for your responses, they were very enlightening. So the way I have this figured, and please correct me if I am wrong, using an estimated 10,000 units that were produced for sets in 1978, 4 versions of the 1980 Dixie Collection at 500 units per version (2000 units total) and 1000 units of the 1980 Gold Rush sets That gives and estimated total production of 13,000 LB7 4 pin Staglon knives all with a blade etch. Not knowing the total production numbers of the 3 pin Staglon LB7s that were produced here in the USA but I can imagine they made quite a few. So could I assume that this knife to be considered rare? Thank you in advance for your response.

Here's a curveball. I have a 1980 Dixie Collection set (#237) and I just looked in the box which still has all the paperwork. The registration certificate calls it an LB8. Schrade is consistently inconsistent. I'd be interested in finding out what the 1978 certificates called it.

Jason,

Just spied this photo from Larry303 on Bladeforums, it's from one of the '78 Old Faithfull Companion sets with the 4 pin version of the knife. Take note of the "LB8" on the card. According to that it looks like they referred to them as LB8's right from the start. I think 'ol Albert was cutting back on his tang stamp funds LOL!

Neat! I think we found the bottom of this rabbit hole - there were no 'official' Staglon LB7s. Boy, those tang stamps must have been expensive, lol.

I've always been confused by this picture which shows a 4 pin knife with an LB7 blade and paperwork. It's a little fuzzy, but the paperwork does say LB7. I always thought that would be a real nice rare collectable. I thought I'd throw this out there to mess with your heads some more. lol

This has been discussed before lol The earliest staglon LB7 were the 1978 Christmas Sets with 144UH and staglon LB7 with brass shield. They are the only examples of a staglon LB7 or LB8 not having nickel silver shields.
