Battle of Red Lake

Utah Black Hawk War (Google it up) In 1865 there was a confrontation between the Mormon Frontiersmen and a band of Indians who were packing Henry Repeating Rifles and Ballard repeating Rifles. The Pioneers were mostly packing muzzle loaders they had left over from the Cival War. This particular battle field (or spot) called the Battle at Red lake, is only a few miles from my boyhood home. I did some research and went there with my metal detector, and found these twelve Henry 44 rimfire rounds about 4 inches beneath the surface . They were up on a small rise overlooking the lake, where the Piaute Indians had a vantage point over the oncoming cavalry(such as it was.) The result was the Mormons got shot up rather badly. History says the leader Major Snow rodeto the town of Glenwood, Utah and died a couple of weeks later of infection from the round that he took in the shoulder. I may have found the case from the fired round!

Those are some artifacts to fire the imagination Dave. Very nice.

I live within minutes of where the Henry Rifles were made, and will probably think of your finds every time I go by there. The Indians probably had the superior weapons due to acquiring them through the fur trade.

Very nice find! Note that the Henry cases have two firing pin strikes on the rim! :)

You know, I've always wanted to buy a metal detector....but I'd probably only find beer cans....

Very interesting part of history!
