All About Pocket Knives

The Statue of Liberty knife is in chocolate stag, the second knife is in red stag and the last one is in sunset bone. I Had to create some springs for these. It was a fun learning experience.
I also learned a bit about dying stag. Dying stag can really transform it!

The chocolate stag was a dying experiment that turned out surprising well. I wasn’t sure if I would like it but once it was sanded and polished I really liked the way it looked!

My thoughts have been IF you get your covers close to the size you need BEFORE you apply the dye, then the result would be more favorable.
What were your finds Jeff?

LOL.... when I was doing some scrimshaw on powder horns, the "big guys" would guard their "antiquing" methods like the Colonel Sanders chicken recipe....LOL.

Nothing top secret about my technique.
I bought 5 different brown leather dyes with colors ranging from light tan to walnut. The knives shown above already had their handles attached when I decided to change their color. I use Q-tips to apply the dye and let it set overnight before I sand and finish them. Sanding after dying brings out some of the lighter tones and white tones. If you’re not happy with it after sanding you can always go back and re-dye the stag. For stag and bone, different slabs will absorb the dye at different rates so they don’t always come out as planned. And yes, it’s usually best to have your slabs already sized before dying otherwise you’ll just have to do a lot of re-dying.
Also, with each coat of dye applied, the color gets a little darker. I applied a couple of different colors to each of the knives to get the final color shown.
I’m currently working on some worn out, old Queen winter bottom bone using the same technique as above. I’ll post up some pics as I get going on those.
