I wonder if KA-BAR will sue…

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

I wonder if KA-BAR will sue…

Post by MadeinUSA »

I now see all kinds of news reports that say the murder weapon in the Idaho slayings was a Ka-Bar…

Yet… the weapon has not been found and initial reports, if I recall, said only a big knife… “like a Ka-Bar” was suspected

I doubt they will sue (they will be called/labeled ‘insensitive’ if they do)… but it sure seems like they (Ka-Bar) are needlessly having their reputation impugned because somebody used a brand name (in law enforcement or the press) when they didn’t know any better… and everyone picked up on it

Wish the crime hadn’t happened, glad LEOs made an arrest, hope justice prevails and hope The Lord’s promise of eternal life provides peace and comfort to the victims’ families.

It's a wonder they didn't say it was a tactical assault knife. I'm so disgusted with the media.

In my opinion, they should--just to teach the media a lesson. I am no lawyer, but I think it may fall under libel and slander. However, Kabar has become a generic term for any large knife.

I got pretty ticked as soon as I heard "no weapon had been found" yet they kept saying Kabar.

The knife used literally was a KA-BAR, the sheath was left at the crime scene next to two of the victims. It said "KA-BAR USMC" on the sheath, they got the guy's DNA off the button on the knife sheath.

The reason the police said it was a ka-bar is because they knew it was, they had the branded sheath but not the knife, I think they wanted the brand name out there in case somebody found it in a ditch or something, they would know it was the possible weapon used

This is a direct quote from one of the officers at the scene of the murder:

"The sheath was later processed and had 'Ka-Bar' 'USMC' and the United States Marine Corps eagle globe and anchor insignia stamped on the outside of it,"

I really don't see what the issue is here with the media.

Didn’t know they knew for sure… maybe they released that info later about the sheath

I was going on early reports… maybe they released that info early and I missed it

I’ve heard the media speculating all sort of things about the knife, including the “Rambo-style” description.

Typical of the media they can’t simply stick to the known facts. If they’re going to editorialize (or sensationalize) by interjecting opinions, they should say they are opinions, or speculation. They don’t. They just throw in their opinions as if they are giving us facts.

Did the LEO say they found a “Ka-Bar USMC” sheath at the scene? Yes. Did the LEO say the murder weapon was a “large Rambo-style” knife? No. The media did. They do this often. That’s the issue. ::nod:: Most people don’t pay attention that closely. They accept it as fact (and repeat it).

This time it is Ka-Bar's turn for receiving some notoriety. One of the local TV stations where I live use this image on their news show background and on their website everytime there is a stabbing or knifing. I downloaded it off their website a few years ago. Buck 119. OH

Old Hunter that Buck is definitely photogenic. I guess an image like this wouldn't have the same dramatic effect hehe:

I have a Case sheath that looks a lot like that. Hope someone didn't put a Case in a Ka-Bar sheath. The poe-leese will be barking up the wrong tree.

That's the same thing I was thinking. Any knife can be carried in any sheath as long as it fits.

I hate that such a great knife company is getting smeared by that news. But then again, remember that the Buck 120 was the choice weapon for the killer in all the Scream movies. I always thought it was bad press but Buck never said anything about it then.
