All About Pocket Knives

Under the watchful eye of Murray Carter ABS Master Bladesmith, myself and two other students made a neck knife each this past weekend. A fully forged, tapered tang knife (not ground) made of laminated Blue Super Steel. The outer layers are 411 stainless steel and the inner core is high carbon (1.4%) Super Steel, laminated in Japan, and imported by Murray. The carbon content is considered high by American standards, borderline to high, but passed the flex test with no problems. The handles are Ironwood, and the pins nickel silver.
The experience was awesome! I may be hooked...........................

Gary.. looks like a great time. WE have a lot of the same interests. I have a friend that makes Damascus. let me know when you want to make a Damascus blade. I will send you some.

You guys are to kind, thank you very much!

I wanted to polish the blade but asked a little to late in the processes. The brownish color is a result of the protective clay coating during quenching. It's water quenched and the clay aids in over-hardening of the steel by reducing the speed in which water effects the steel. It also helps evenly dissipate heat from the steel to get an even result throughout the entire blade. A lot of blades are differentially quenched, meaning the cutting edge (one third of the blade) is often the only part quenched or hardened. I could wear this knife down clear to the spine and the hardness would be the same.
