Is there a way to determine value?

Yes, this is a newbie question! I thought I’d start by asking questions in different rooms. So what I have for this room, is related to valuing a switch blade. For any of my other knives, I can always search on eBay, and typically find something close and assess the market value by the auctions. However, since they don’t allow switchblades, I’m not sure how to determine if any of mine carry any value. This also makes it difficult to determine how much to pay when I find one on the market through antique stores or knife shows. I have about 6 stiletto style and 6 other styles. Thanks for any advice.

Prices are imaginary. One rich guy iight offer a billion dollar for a knife while ten thousand others may only offer $200.

There is not right or wrong. If someone makes you a decent off and you’re both happy then that’s all that matters.

Unless a person buys or sells all the time you’re not in a position to give current values or prices.

Getting values from eBay sold listings works pretty well for most items other than switchblades. eBay in their PC-mania virtue signaling attempts to suppress those.

Nice, I understand. It’s sort of like how I bought the stuff I already have. Essentially “What does my gut say and how bad do I want it.” That determines MY value in the moment. Thanks everyone, I appreciate the conversation!

I think there is a general price range for most knives, high medium and low, that can be used as a gauge.
Rarer or more obscure knives might need evaluation, and of course some folks will pay whatever it takes if they are keen on getting a particular model.

Why don't you list a few of them here, show us some pics, if nothing else it is entertaining.
Look through the sold listing here in the AAPK store too.

Sure thing. I just shared the stiletto drawer photo in the “Stiletto Storage/Case Options” forum stream, so some of you may have seen the one picture already. The ages (from what I’ve been led to believe) vary. The Boker is newer, as well as a couple of the stilettos. The rest are 30-40 years old, I think. Zooming in helps, but if you want any different angles or maker markings, or have questions, just let me know. PS - don’t worry about hurting my feelings, I believe I already pointed out that I’m still a novice. Learning by my mistakes helps me to get better!

OH yea, was just amiring your storage chest earlier, i recognize this !
A nice selection you have, I particularly like the ring-pull Sicilian (its got style!)
Dating and valuing them would take more, noting tang stamps and condition etc. But thanks for sharing your collection !

GRK!
In your top picture you have 3 decent models and 3 Chinese inexpensive models.
The mustard yellow Kalashnikov on the far-left is a decent knife, the Hubertus leverlock right beside it is an excellent knife, and the toothpick on the far-right is a decent knife, in my opinion.
The John Deere and the knife with bright red covers are inexpensive Chinese models for sure, but the lighter red knife with the grooves cut into the covers might be a Piranha, which is another decent knife but from your pictures I can't tell for sure what make it is, but it's one of the 3 that I originally thought was a Chinese knife.
In your bottom picture you have 5 mid-level stilettos that are likely Frank B. builds and are very decent knives, and the ring-pull with black covers at the very bottom is an AGA Campolin "Siciliano" fighter that I'd classify as upper mid-level, again in my opinion.
Would you please measure the AGA Campolin ring-pull when it's open and tell me how long it is, and, is it available to buy? Thx! 8)

Here are some clearer shots. The toothpick is difficult to read, it’s a Hammer. You are correct on the ring pull, and it’s a full 12 inches, from 2013.

Well, I was right on 4 out of 5, I guess I was wrong about the Kalashnikov though.
Are you selling the ring-pull, and if so how much? ::shrug:: 8)

Thanks for asking but no, I’m trying to build my collection with higher quality well made items. I’ve only been selling the knives I consider lower end and boring. I’m making friends at the pawnshop! ::groove::

No problem bud, if you don't ask you'll never know.
That's a fine plan you're following as well, to focus on the better stuff right off the bat, as opposed to doing what me and others have done which was buy up a bunch of inexpensive models only to find there are much better examples available.
I did alright though, of my 300 or so knives there's only about 40 that had I known better I wouldn't have bought.
They're cool knives that I don't MIND having in my collection, they just don't see as much fondle time as my nicer pieces.
You're off to a good start with that "Siciliano", it's a well built knife that oozes cool!
Please keep me in mind should you have a change of heart! 8)

Don’t get me wrong, I started like you too 15 years ago! The items I have been unloading have been the earlier ones. (and the ones my son thought were cool). I have been a very passive collector and just started getting into it more. And I get pressure from the wife to get rid of the same number as I’m buying! ::shrug::

Hey, I get it man!
I no longer have a better-half or anyone else to tell me what and what not I can or can't do, so the choices I've made I can only blame on myself, and I certainly don't regret any of the choices, I would just do things a bit differently next time.
It's kindda funny though, even though some of my models aren't exactly ground-breaking examples of fine cutlery, I still get a charge out of playing with them and remembering the circumstances under which I bought them, they bring back some great memories. 8)
