Japanese made Cabelas knife?

Post by RedRaiderRick »

I have a Cabelas knife I bought new between 1991 and 93. It's a heavy Cattle size knife with 3 stainless blades including a clip point, a gut hook and a bone saw. It has heavy stag scales. Cleaned and skinned dozens of critters. Main blade stamped Japan. Still snappy, no wobble. It's been a great knife. Any ideas on who made it? Can post a pic later today.

Hey Rick please post a picture of that. It sounds a lot like one made by Master Tak Fukuta. He made a two blade for A.G. Russell around that same time.

Here it is. Used my sunglasses for scale. It's too big and heavy for pocket carry. Blades are mirror polished.

Thanks Rick, it looks a lot like a Browning knife made by Master Hattori. The blade configuration is a bit different than the Browning model, but that might be a modification that Cabelas did to differentiate theirs from the Browning version. This looks just like the single blade Browning knife Hattori made for them. Their hunters had a different shape to the bolsters, but I could see how this single blade could have been modified to accommodate the specs for the Cabelas. It’s very difficult to determine these things. Knife sellers don’t want to share their sources for who makes their knives for some reason, it’s like a State secret.

Thanks Mark. I couldn't guess how many critters I have dressed, skinned and quartered with this knife. Eventually I got a large folding bone saw and stopped using the Cabelas saw but still use the primary and gut hook frequently.

If it is made by Hattori, it’s a generational knife. You can pass it down to your kids with lots of life left in it. Whether or not it’s served you VERY well. Nice stag on that one.
