All About Pocket Knives

I was wondering if anybody here collects tobacco tags.

I've never heard of a tobacco tag but I would like to learn about them. Do you have any pictures?

Sorry for the poor picture quality,here is part of my collection,I have over 700 tags,but they made over 12,000 different types.they were included on a plug of chewing tobacco.they stopped putting them on around 1930.

These are not tobacco tags and I don't collect, just accumulate. I started saving my cigar bands some years ago (been smoking cigars daily since 1973).

Hey thanks for sharing Beavertail those are really nice. How in the world did you get into collecting these?? I dipped Copenhagen for 23 years before quitting 5 years ago but I never could get into chewing tobacco or plug tobacco even though I've tried my share..

Glad you enjoy the tags.the reason i started collecting tobacco tags is a long story.i have been dipping and chewing since i was 6 years old.my dad was a chewer,and i kept bugging him to let me try some,so he did,thinking it would make me sick.needless to say it didn't,and i've been chewing ever since.but what really got me started collecting tobacco tags was about 30 years ago i was at a flea market and i found a big display of tags.i asked if they were for sale but the dealer said no.i went back there the next week and the tags were gone,the dealer said he got a real good deal on them.well that pi**ed me off so much,that i made up my mind to have a bigger and better collection that he would not sell to me.i guess i should not have started to collect something just for spite,but now i'm hooked on them.not to change the subject,but do you know what a case tested 6299 greenbone teardrop jack is worth? i bought one about 20 years ago up at decker's flea market for $80 it came off an old tested board.

are those tags metal?

the latest parker book says mint - $650. your milage may vary. few go for book unless............ show us a pic of it.

Yes they are metal tags.At first,They used wooden tags,then paper tags.At some point they started using metal tags,but it was a big failure because the first metal tags were put under the tobacco leaf wrapper and if the person didn't know it was there he would bite down on it.the tag was then put on the outer leaf.In later years they were used as a premium to exchange for gifts.I have an old catalog of all kinds of gifts you could get,watches,knives,guns,and furniture.

Those are really neat. I have never seen one before. As a dipper, tobacco related items are of interest to me. Thanks for showing them
