Need Help with This Old KA-BAR Fixed Blade

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Need Help with This Old KA-BAR Fixed Blade

Post by Paladin »

Guys,
Asking for help on this neat looking KA-BAR Fixed Blade. I am asking to help out a friend.
This one is 8¾ inches OAL and blade length is 4¾ inches. Handles are leather ring and there is what I think is a unique escutcheon with the image of a bear on it. I don't recall seeing this before. The ricasso is stamped KA-BAR (over) PAT. AUG 31, 1926.
I'll attach some photos. Any info will be appreciated.

Ray

Definitely made after August 31, 1926. ::sotb:: I like that shield. ::nod::👍 Gene probably knows this one.

Model 582. They dropped the bear shield after a year or two. This knife and the "Minuteman" featured this shield but they used it on the Minuteman for a longer period. Both were introduced in 1926. This one is a bit short and a bit "skinny". The blade length should be 4&1/2 inches and the blade maybe an eighth inch or more wider. Cool knife, fairly hard to find with the bear shield.

Here is a super rare original one page supplement to the Outdoor Knife brochure depicting the 582. The Grizzly was also introduced that year. Here you can see the blade is wider than the OP knife
