All About Pocket Knives

I have a Hook-Eye Cutlery Grinder that I recently purchased and ordered and just received some belts for - any feedback on these machines?

In my opinion any electric-powered grinder, sharpener, buffer, etc belongs only in the hands of a skilled cutler, or limited to use on lawnmower blades, kitchen knives, and the like. Should not be used on collectable cutlery by us amateurs (I include myself in that category).

The problem is the machines can remove a lot of metal in a hurry - one can do a lot of damage real quick, with one mistake/accident. And once it’s removed, you can’t put it back. Unless you really know what you’re doing and how to do it, and have a lot of knives needing work or sharpening, best to stick with conventional hand tools.

Mumble - that is a really good point

I have never used one of these, but, if I had one, I would probably figure out how to use it and give it a try. Step 1, use a few practice knives that you pick up cheap. I can easily ruin any knife on my powered sharpeners, mostly belt sander types, but, I have a slow grinder that I have never used for knives, only things such as chisels in very bad shape (or similar). I also have a Tormek, which is less likely to really to really mess it up, but, I could do it there as well.

If you need to do a lot of sharpening or if a knife is in really bad shape, using a powered device is very useful to get things into shape.

Would love to hear how you like it if you use one. And while you are learning, do not use your favorite knives, get some cheap testing knives.

good thoughts pit - as I work my way through it I will report. Chisels and such are a good idea to get used to it.

For that particular sharpener and guide system I think a knife is better suited.

ok - I will play around with it. Certainly start with test knifes.
