All About Pocket Knives

Found this in Goins’. This is all the help I am.

I did find a few things on the Shapleigh company and that these knives were made in St. Louis but that was about all

Shapleigh was a Hardware Co. the knives the sold was made by major knife companies in the USA like Schrade and others imported from Germany. You have a very nice example of a knife primarily intended for the youth market. Thus Every Boy should have one. These were fairly inexpensive and affordable. Prone to being lost as boys will do. Back when I did metal detecting any old county school site would typically find 3-7 pocket knives. By then of course the knife was total rusted lump.

I seem to recall that those were made by the George Schrade Knife Co but I can't remember where I saw that. I'm also positive we have one out in the museum but not sure if it's marked Shapleigh or G. Schrade. I'm going out there next week so I'll check then.

Sounds and looks correct to me too, Eric.

Here's one from Rite-Way Food Stores. They have a strange mechanism, no rocker pin showing for the spring. It appears to be integral to the liners?? Wonder if it's a George Schrade gizmo. He had a number of knife patents and Schrade was one of Shapleigh's supplier. ? J.O'
