Thanks fellas! I sharpened it and took it out for a walk around the yard. The steel from the ferrier rasp holds a good edge with a oil quench.

I'm guessing that "with a oil quench" means you softened your rasp before making the blade or mabe only tempered it to make it less brittle. I suppose wood rasps or horse shoe rasps could be manufactured a little less hard than files that are intended for filing steel but probably are heat treated the same.

If you have another old ferrier's rasp to sacrafice you could leave the teeth on the blade's spine survival knife style or dull the teeth for scaling fish.

First try looks pretty good. I look forward to the next ones.

Reminds me of the knives made by Anza Knives in El Cajon, California. Anza builds from files, but I don't recall them offering guards, at least on most of their knives. I own several and they are nice knives.
