All About Pocket Knives

Sleeping in today cost me an ebay auction lost. I was watching this knife for the past week with the goal of bidding on it at the last minute. After being up late last night working on a college paper, I slept in and missed the auction's end by about 1/2 hour.

I would have gladly paid five times what the winner paid for this knife. I've never seen anything like it. Any idea where it was made or by who? On one hand it looks French, but the blade grinds look American or English. It's marked Stainless which usually means it was made for Western consumption, but it is oddly not marked with a country of origin and if it was designed to be sold in the US (and be from the stainless blade era) I would think a country of origin would be plainly marked.

I am perplexed about the circular tool, but I assume it might be for pipe smoking? Also, note the decorated brass bail. Unsure of handle materials. If anyone can explain more about this knife, its country of origin or purpose, or if you have a similar one for sale - let me know!

Taiei was a town in Japan.

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan.

Im guessing Taiei cutlery would be associated with either of those two countries. Looks 60's or late 50's to me. Also the font of the wording looks typical of Japanese pocket knives, at least in what I'm familiar with from the 70's and 80's.


I've no idea about the tool. The bail is a nice touch, not very common to have that decorated.

Bummer you missed out. Sleeps good though, there's always more knives to be had.

Just a guess, but could the tool be a lead or some type of ballpoint pen holder?

Almost looks like a valve core tool, but it may be too small for that.

Maybe the round blade is used for binding wire in crafts construction???? crafts knife.

the others I’ve seen like this turned out to be a dog whistle - hard to tell from the provided images.

You should look into snipe apps if sniping is one of your purchase strategies to avoid future disappointments.

Yeah, I don't usually snipe or try to get into bidding wars. It was just a fluke that I meant to bid on and forgot. It was in my watched and I just plain missed it.

I am not interested in those apps, actually, I think they are unfair and I think that any time an auction is won via a snipe app, the last "natural" bidder should have the right to go above the sniper if they wish to. If not, then the sniper gets it. I don't see how the sellers would mind this. How are the snipe apps even viable - do they collect an additional fee for auctions they win on??

the one I’ve used in the past is called HammerSmipe and it’s 100% free and it uses your eBay login and password to place your bid as though you had logged-in and placed it yourself. The seller has no way to discern a natural or automated snipe bid.

Not the one I use, but it's the only way I use eBay for the pas 10 years.

So surprised to find that this odd blade is a "snipe" never would have guessed????????
