All About Pocket Knives

Well.... since I collect Old Timer knives... I figured I needed an Old Timer axe!
I have been watching the bay for weeks and finally..... this one showed up yesterday.
It is a 3-1/2 pounder.


It reads....

OLD TIMER

I have a nice handle on the way to put it on.

When I was a little feller, my uncle used a double bitt axe that I was not allowed to get near.

It raises the question how long ago did Schrade register their trade mark?

One of my grandmothers told how loggers sat around the camp fire sharpening their double bit falling axes until they could shave with them in the morning. It's a good thing I'm not a real man. I'd probably gouge my throat beyond repair.

I have seen other axe brands with the name "OLD TIMER"... One in particular is COLLINS.

I'm not sure if the name "OLD TIMER" belonged to Schrade or not.... That is a good question for the guys over on the Schrade area.

I finally got a chance to hang the Old Timer head.
Here it is laying next to a True American (MANN) saddle cruiser.

Doubles can be dangerous. I used to throw axes and my favorite was a Plumb Cruiser. They were used by the Timber Cruisers that graded and marked timber, and have relatively short handles. One time I made a throw and heard this strange zipping sound. My buddy that was behind me came running over yelling was OK? One tip of the double slice a $40 Pendleton flannel shirt in half. Looked like it was sliced with a razor, but it didn't touch the T Shirt under it or any skin. That was 40 years ago and $40 was a lot of money, and I heard about it!

A side note, I was fourth generation in the tree business. When I first started working for my Dad, they hadn't started making small chainsaws yet. We used doubles for limbing up trees. One thing you never did was touch someone's axe. I'm still like that.
