I'm curious what the general opinion is regarding the quality of Opinel knives.

They are a very good blade in an inexpensive but utilitarian handle. I think they're a great value as a workhorse knife.

I have a few Opinels.
They are a great knife. Their locking twist mechanism has improved.
They have many sizes to choose from.

Got interested in Opinels back when I was still gainfully employed. I bought a bunch of them for Christmas gifts for the crew one year.
Found the carbon steel ones to be very easy to sharpen. Bought some stainless bladed ones for grandson's when they were doing a lot of fishing.
My son also got one of the 1st bunch and used it to dress a buck. He said it worked good for him. I tried the one I kept of that 1st bunch and found if the knife got really wet, the handles would swell up and be difficult to open and close. Seem to recall posting about it here on the forum. Put the Opinel in a ziploc bag of rice and set it on the dash of my truck parked in the sun. That was a successful experiment and taught me not to get the French knife wet. :)

I wanted to get a few to use as kitchen knives. My wife dislikes knife blocks, and her kitchen knives get full when rattling around in a drawer. I thought that, being closed, the edges would be protected.
But she vetoed that idea.
So I got my own kitchen knives and I leave hers dull.

They are in my opinion, decent quality knives that hold an edge. I have a collector set of them, plus a couple users that I rarely use. They are very light weight and would be a good choice for hiking or sheep hunting where weight is a consideration.
