All About Pocket Knives

These guys fell off the Ebay truck that was carrying away a little pile of my money ! Actually, not too bad.
The Cattle knife is excellent unsharpened, the others not bad at all, except they've been "de-patina'ed" a bit. The junior scout is cool, with the blade worn, but nearly full length, as that's all that will fit!
I think three are Ulster/Schrade descendants, but I'm not sure of the Scout. Anyone know??

Very nice, I cant say for sure but they the schrade- ulster look dont they!

The junior scout looks like an Empire to me. Empire made the early DE knives for Shapleigh, circa 1900 to WWI era.

The rest are unmistakeably Schrade.

Empire is a lesser recognized (except by knifeaholic!) contract maker of many older knives. They were a big company!

If you look in the "Knife Album" by Bob Mayes, there are reproduced pages of an early Shapleigh catalog, the pocketknife section...all DE patterns (except for the Schrade made push buttons) were made by Empire...and the catalog actually lists each knife as being available as an EMPIRE or as a DIAMOND EDGE.

I once owned (and have seen others) an Empire junior scout, the tooling looking similar to your DE.

The <D-E> Saga continues. I am trying to get organized, and so I put together these two groups of DEs. The waterfall stockman is so beautiful, it will turn the head of the most confirmed cell-avoider!
Varying ages, conditions and makers, as you can see. If you look close, you will see a Norvell-Shapleigh, and an Imperial D-E.

These two belong in this thread also. We'll let the Joseph Rodgers sneak in there too .

The more I get to see the Shapleigh Single blade Folding hunter, the more eager I get awaiting the Case/Tony Bose release.

Another one in the fold, this from one of my favorite Ebay sellers. Every knife I've gotten from him is exactly as described, or better!!
I know, I know, it is celluloid, but dayum, I will risk it for this knife! So purty, and a quarter the price of a bone handled one!

Here is a old DE 5 1/4" coke bottle two blade. Tang stamp Norvell Shapleigh HDW. Co. ST. L. around a diamond with D-E in the center of diamond. Blade etch DIAMOND EDGE with DE in diamond. Steel bolsters and steel liners. 1902 to 1917 per Goings' latest edition.
My question is, is this a Empire made knife? I never gave this any thought until I read these posts.

I got that old knife in a trade about 7 years ago....aint done a damn thing with it.

I think she would look real good with a new spear blade and pen though..

Stockman, I am 99% sure that your Cokebottle Hunter is an Empire-made knife. I will dig up a picture of one I have marked Empire.

Here it is, but different. The handle pattern, bolster and blade look the same, but of course it has no saw, and it is a lockback.

It's been a couple of months' sleep for this thread, so it's time to wake it up! I loaned this knife to a knifemaker, to use for a pattern just after I purchased it at the Blade show. It has finally made it home, and it is a most unusual knife. It has a lot of detail packed into a small 2 7/8" size, and initially was likely very expensive, compared to your average Jack knife.
All the blades are marked, and the bolsters are rat-tail filed, and nicely shaped. It has a special manicure blade, tapered backsprings, great swedges, and a snap worthy of a much bigger knife, yet the blades are not painful to open. The shape is very unusual, as you don't often see the swell on the upside. Pretty cool, and well preserved.

Is this the pattern that Pappy is going to make, Charlie ?

Here's one that I have;wonder who made this one.A fish jack pattern given to me by my sister-in-law who got it from her grandmother who was from Saint Louis.Horn handles and in reasonably good shape.
