Another reason to not use Facebook

Our son is a pastor currently serving as a missionary overseas. Facebook has “shadow banned” many posts about his ministry’s activities. What this means is that he can see his posts as if nothing is wrong, but no one else can see those posts - to him it appears as if nothing is amiss, but no one sees them. Facebook does not tell him when they do this, they just arbitrarily do it. So basically he is the only one that can see many of his posts.

Here is another example of Facebook’s more overt censorship. https://tsra.com/news_manager.php?page=38488

Facebook may be censoring you too, and you don’t even know it. ::sneaky::

not me Ken, I never post, just view livestreams and read others posts and marketplace listings. Doesn’t surprise me, their platform-their rules.

I don’t post either - don’t have an account. I’m not “woke” enough.

I censor Faceboog, but I bet they don't lose any sleep over it. ::mdm::

I don’t have facepuke as I call it
No Twitter or X whatever it’s called today
No instafart
No tic tack

All not my thing a lot of dangerous misinformation floating around on there
My kids send me small videos here and there

Although even though I don’t use it I think Facebook can be useful for some to keep up with family far away

Just my opinion

Our church has a Facebook account.
We use it for announcements of upcoming events and link to our YouTube channel.
We occasionally get questions, not often.
The plus is that we've had a few people who discovered our church via Facebook.

I tried to kill my FB account for hours and couldn't do it. I finally went to my computer guru and it took him several minutes. I then got a notice that it would not be finalized for thirty days. If I clicked on a Facebook link during that time my account would be reinstated. Hopefully I will be good to go day after tomorrow. Ironically, much of the stuff there is NOT censored, and should be. Millions of people have bought into destructive misinformation, lies, conspiracy theories, etc. The digital world in general has turned into a cesspool.

I have never had FB. Although my favorite name I read was facepuke. Never let the kids do it until they were old enough on their own. I did sign up for LinkedIn in when looking for a job. Got booted for a short time because I was going through the page trying to remember all the people along the way. It said that I was some sort of threat. Of course I didn’t pay for the premium subscription. What ever.
My wife signed up on FB because our daughter went in the Air Force.
I always liked to say I like FaceTime.
Does not surprise me that they suppress information. Let it all fly.
Imagine that I am old enough to decide what I will read and do my research if I think something is disturbing disinformation dishonest. The one thing I will do is the first swear word I am done.
Just my 2 cents worth. And thanks to the last administration it’s one .5 cents.

I don’t have a Facebook account. I think it would be cool to get in touch with some old Army buddies or High School friends but I’m not going to sign up just for that.

Steve,
Same with the church we attend, several folks new to the community, went on the Facebook and found our church.
Since there are no more Yellow Pages, folks get information from the cyber world.
There are always 2 sides to a coin, same with Facebook, we see good and then we hear things like what is happening to Ken's son. Miss Joy's has a cousin up in north Alabama that is a pastor, each morning he posts a short gospel message and it seems to be followed by a lot of folks. ::shrug::

Edit: I just discovered AAPK has a Facebook page.

Every night (and sometimes day) there is a knife auction being live-streamed to an audience of up to 200 viewers. Some are modern/tactical, some are vintage and some are brand specific like Case. I’ve seen knives sell for as much as $3,000 on these live-streams. I’ve learned a ton from these auctions, got to cyber-meet some knowledgeable knife people and I’ve even made a few purchases when I knife spoke to me. Like anything in life, you need to sift through the bad to find the good. YMMV

"Facebook may be censoring you too, and you don’t even know it" ::hmm::

Is the main complaint here that there is censorship on FB?

::paranoid:: I guess my question is: ::paranoid:: .... AAPK is NOT censoring any post? ::shrug::

::paranoid:: Maybe, I guess the difference on AAPK is that you do know when you are being censored? ::shrug::

And ... ::paranoid:: I will add ... a private forum has the right to censor content .... (and always should have the right) ::paranoid::

Private citizens have the right NOT to participate in the forum... on the other side of the coin... ::hmm::

I just closed my FB account the other day. I got a notice that my account was suspended for, " violating company standards " although they didnt specify what standards l violated and provided no way to find out. They stated that a review was being done of my appeal( l never made one; there was no provision to do so) and l would be notified of the result.
A few days later l was asked to submit a "selfie" supposedly to prove l wasnt a robot. Instead l submitted a 2 word note: F##K OFF!!! I then terminated my account. I'm getting too old for this s##t!!!

The complaint here is censorship based on arbitrary (to my knowledge unpublished) “community standards”, and their “shadow banning”. Shadow banning is a nefarious practice of manipulating posts such that the account owner can see posts they have made, but no one else can see them. And not telling the account owner this is happening. Then when discovered, not providing any specifics as to why the posts were “shadow banned” other than they do not meet “community standards”.

Makes sense, ::hmm:: ... I also think F.B. was abusing users over Covid-19 posts and claiming anything they did not approve off was "disinformation" ... ::paranoid:: and it turns out that practices such as standing 6 feet apart and wearing a flimsy piece of cloth over your mouth had no actual beneficial effect or basis in science. However, if you dared mention that (the truth) you were banned on many forums/sites. Real "1984" stuff... ::skeptic::

"Shadow banning” stinks to high Heavan, :x what a sneaky underhanded way to do 'biddness! I stopped using F.B. about 15 years ago ... I don't miss it one bit. ::huff::

One can only hope Zuckerberg gets indicted in early 2025 for election interference. Time in an orange jumpsuit will send a strong message to other miscreants.

I don't but the "his company, his rules" argument when Facebook interweb flow goes through public and private servers AND because those shadow banned are done so secretly.

This is the closest thing to social media I use. And one of the only sites I visit. I don't exist digitally. Not to say my info isn't being freely shared by corporations. I don't know that you can escape that. I also don't watch live tv of any kind or watch or read any news in any shape or form. I used too. Alot.

In their absence I developed a prayer and meditation practice. I don't miss the digital boat anchors tied to my ankles at all.

Good on your son and your family for his good work. I hope he is well and safe in his travels.
