Do an internet search for "Bowen (or Lyman) Muzzle Loading Patch Knife."
Assuming it is a patch knife then if Skip had used the word while instead of before he'd be correct. An irregular shaped rag is laid loosly over the gun's muzzle then the lead ball is pressed in flush with a short starter. Round cabinent door knobs with a short stub of ram rod fitted in their flat side make good short starters. It should take a hard slap with your palm to swage the cloth wrapped ball into the rifling. All cloth left above the muzzle is cut off with the patch knife. Round patches that you center the ball in just before starting it into the barrel are either cut at home with scisors or bought ready to use. Since any sharp knife works as well as knives marketed as patch knives most muzzle loaders do not buy special patch knives.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 4:42 amDo an internet search for "Bowen (or Lyman) Muzzle Loading Patch Knife."
The patch knife is primarily used to cut patches of cloth or leather to be
wrapped around the rifle ball before loading it into the muzzleloader.
That was NOT my description. I copied and pasted that description from the internet.
