Maher Grosh help

William H. Maher and Emil Grosh started the Maher & Grosh Wholesale Cutlery Co. in 1877 with a goal to sell high quality US manufactured cutlery globally. The original business dissolved in 1988, but the brand has since been resurrected.

Maher Grosh help

Post by Bweik »

Morning all!

I have a question about my Maher Grosh knife. After quite a bit of time searching, I cannot find this knife anywhere…there are lots of 2 bladed knives like this one, but I can’t find a single, single blade knife at all.

Wondering if someone could shed some light for me please. Maybe year, rarity and value.

Ok it won’t let me upload a pic. It an early teardrop jack knife. Has the longer crest running with the length of the knife.

Pre WWI era.It has steel bolsters and pins, and I will assume steel liners. It's heavily worn, not much value,$25-40.

::welcome:: to AAPK! I (and some others) call your knife a HOK (Honest Old Knife). I would gladly own and carry that one, with a nice edge. 😎👍

Ulster was a company that made knives for Maher and Grosh, along with many others.

I have a book containing some reprints of old Maher and Grosh catalogs, and I found a couple of knives that could be yours. There were several two-bladed knives that were built on a similar frame, but I only found a couple of single bladed in this style. Unfortunately the reprints do not have measurements for the knives, but one of these might be yours:
No 103
No 103
The picture shows Number 103 1/2, but it says that Number 103 has the spearpoint blade.
This original catalog was printed around 1900. I found the same knife listed again in the 1929-30 catalog.

1887C and 1887G
1887C and 1887G
Also from the 1900 catalog, these political knives had a gold-tone plating on the bolsters and the ad states that it could have an etch. It might be that they also made a version without any etch in other years, or perhaps you have one that the etch and plating have worn off.
The shield on these look like yours, so it may be that they made this pattern for a while without the political advertising.
I did not see this pattern in the 1929-30 catalog.

Either way, your knife could possibly be a century old. Very likely, from the looks of it.
At least we do know that M&G made this style knife at one time, so yours is likely legitimate.
I hope this information helps!
