All About Pocket Knives

What??? is this guy daft??? (possibly

...but nevermind that).....

I occasionally like to carry a smedium (small/medium) straight knife in my pocket...usually the right rear. If they aren't too big, I've gotten used to them, and don't even notice when I'm sitting, driving, whatever.

Here are two of the ones I carry. Both utilize a sheath with a clip, rather than a loop of any kind, because here in the desert, I wear a lot of shorts and shirts outside...no belts.

First one was made for me by Charlie Davis at ANZA knives...based on his F-4 model. From an old file (1085 Carbon steel), canvas micarta scales, lanyard attachment, and a couple other little tweaks.

Second one, from David Winston. Model 9, D2 steel, fluted Ironwood scales.

Third picture is showing the sheath David made up for me.
He does very nice work.

It was pretty slow in here, so I'm trying to jumpstart a little CUSTOM talk.

Hi Bill,

Great looking knives. I really like the David Winston. I wish I had more custom knives to post, but I can't seem to save my knife allowance long enough to save up enough to get ahold of some nice ones ...

Speaking of sheaths though, I'm going to put in another plug for Colin Paterson (I can't help it cause he keeps improving and impressing me with his work.). These are his first two sheaths. He emailed pictures of them to me at various steps in the process. I probably wouldn't have believed him otherwise...

Here is one more I have...The D'holder "Unfolder"...the style has since been renamed, but, I'm sticking with the original name.....because I'm stubborn.

Great knives ! Most of my knives are custom made and my dream is to make a few myself. I am currently developing wooden scabbards for some knives without sheaths that you can put in
your pocket and I have carried them that way. Others, I have added
laminates or raw hide to make primitive appearance and carry variations.
I'll throw in a picture of a few of my smaller knives with D2 (my favorite)
blades, just to share.

That first one makes me want to grab it and skin a deer or something. Looks like a great design for such a task.

Bryan, thanks for your comment. Most deer hunters
that I know, use small knives and even folding hunters. The important
thing is convenience and sharpness for the job needed.

9ball: that knife is my smallest fixed blade, but it could
handle a lot of jobs. I prefer my filet knives from Finland for fish work.
Say, what do you think about showing off some more custom. We could
show some damascus or some extreme tactical stuff ? I have a few
large blades ? El Lobo got me fired up, but it means taking some pictures
and and a lot of work !

Here is my favorite LARGE knife, just for SEVENTY. I have trouble getting this one out of my pocket though....now get to work and post some pictures.

El Lobo do you actually put this in your pocket?
Do you have a scabbard or sheath for protection? I couldn't trust any
of my blades not to slice into places that I hold dear and protective.
I like your knife and true to my word, I'm including an ivory handled
knife with a very sharp 154 CM blade that likes to slice its way out of
the sheath and a fat blade with virgin stag (unground) if I can find the
picture. My problem with pictures is limited to my scanner table because
I do not have a camera. I may have to do some editing

OK, I might have been fibbing about putting it in my pocket...as it is 21" long, and weighs 3 1/2 lbs.

Here is where it normally resides, safely sheathed.

Here is a Pearce Horseshoe knife. His Grandson is beating them out now.

He has came up with some of his own designs and with Railroad spikes also.
He has also changed the stamp.

9ball, I have seen some railroad spike knives with a twisted handle in A.G.Russell's knife list some years back. Would Mr. Pearce have been the maker of those or is it not that unique?

Good morning SEVENTY & others

Well.......with out seeing the catalog I cannot say. He is/was in Arkansas and I know Blue Ridge carried them at one time, like mine and the Spike also. It came with a black leather sheath.
The Grandson changed the stamp to a Dragon, I think. He has a website but cannot find the link now. If I do, I'll post it.
There is one (original Pearce RR Spike) on eBay now, did it look like this?

Bill, you did good. Both sites lend information to the inquiring mind. What I originally asked 9ball seems to be the answer and that was most likely a Pearce. However, Ray Rogers crafted a nice knife in that 3rd or bottom picture. It must be gratifying to have such talent.

Bill, as long as I can buy a D2 knife with a nice handle
for less than what these "spikes" cost, I could not reconcile the purchase for novelty reasons. It seems impractical! I don't even have a talent for looking.

Hopefully you guys will not mind if I show my two latest additions to my very limited custom fixed blade collection...

Both are made by South African knife maker Arno Bernard whose work I really like and is very affordable because of the currency exchange rate !!! One is a Rams Horn 8" and the other is a Giraffe Bone 8", both come with Cape Buffalo Sheath's...I have one other Bernard knife that is in Wart Hog Ivory scales..

If you get a chance show us a group picture of your customs, I know I have seen a couple before but I like the style knives that you have showed in past posting...That's if you get a chance...

I have never really been a great fan of wood scales but evidently I just have not been looking at quality scales made in wood, those zebrawood handles are stout...
