Old Timers on display

Just a heads-up. My humble collection of Old Timer knives will be on display this summer at the New Mexico Scouting Museum in Raton, New Mexico. There never was an official BSA Old Timer, but Scouts have probably been carrying Old Timers of every soft for over 40 years.

Its' not worth hopping a jet to Denver and renting a car to see this collection. But if anyone is in the neighborhood (I25, Philmont Scout Ranch, or Whittington NRA Center) this summer, it might be worth stopping by.

Bob... I'm an Old Timer lover from way back... Any pictures of your collection you can share here?? Since I live in Washington I doubt seriously that I'll end up in cruzing New Mexico this summer.... Gary

Hey Bob, I was in the BSA and I think its great that they are doing this and you are involved. I was a scout from 72' to 77' and did carry an OLD TIMER
alot. It was one of only a few knives a boy of 12 to 15 could afford. Imperials too.

Thanks for the pictures Bob…::tu:: (at over $3 a gallon that trip would have been expen$ive)... I like the Prince Albert collection… I have a little 108OT that I’ve carried for about 25 years now and it’s still going strong – sharpens easy and holds an edge well… As a matter of fact I have three of them put away so if anything happens to my edc (heaven forbid) I won’t go into withdrawl.. I like the OT Classics also and have a couple of nice displays.. When the Classics came out in the tins I bought up a ‘bunch’ of them and gave them to my boys and some good friends for edc's… Good luck with the Scouting display - I'm a veteran Cub & Boy Scout myself - I really enjoyed it for many years.. Thanks for showing an interest. The museum is privately owned by a long-time scouter. Other than working at Philmont for several years, I'm not involved with scouting personally.

Glad to hear it. It's too bad that the BSA never officially licensed any of the Old Timers as "Official Scout Knives"; I think they would be well-suited for a young person learning to carry a pocketknife as part of being a gentleman. Schrade did license some of their other knife brands though with the BSA. My only official Scout knife is an Imperial utility/camp design.

The three knives that were offered through the Prince Albert deal were all Ulster models - the 58OT, 10OT (Barlow), and the 114OT Camper. The Schrade 108OT is similar to the Ulter 58, but the 58 is a bit larger.

I like the OT Classics also and have a couple of nice displays

I have the Peanut, Stockman, and Trapper from the Old Timer Classic series. Very nice knives. I'll have to keep my eyes open for an OTC96 Birdhook - that's the one I'm missing.

To update this topic...

The Old Timer Collection is no longer on display at the Scouting Museum. Before bringing the collection home though, I took a few photos with a borrowed digital camera.

I did not make it to Denver.

I am sure super glade you took that show to AAPK.

I would have love to have been a mouse in the corner and watch and hear the dads, Grate-dads and scoutes when they say that. The glass must have been FULL of finger prints from all the pointing.

In addition to the display, I made a pamphlet about Schrade knives, Old Timers, and the closing of the factory. I felt it important to have an educational aspect, not just a bunch of knives for looking at. Each knife in the case was numbered and the pamphlet included a key saying what each number was.

Anyhow, here's how I explained the Canal Streets:

Canal Street Cutlery, the heritage of Schrade. Canal Street Cutlery was created by former Schrade employees after the 2004 bankruptcy. The knives are handmade in the same building that was once the historic Schrade-Walden factory in Ellenville, New York.

I thought it was good to end the display with a positive, forward-looking tone. Hope you agree.

Very good ending I agree. Except I would have called it a FORCED-BANKRUPTCY. Do to the players that took down Schrade.

Very nice of you to lend your knives to the scout museum.

Our scout museum in NH is quite nice, but only has a few knives scattered in the displays.
