My mom has collected knives from each of my uncles and both of my grandfathers over the past 30 years. Coincidentally, almost all of them are Schrade Old Timer 8OT's. Of course, they were working knives, and I don't want to restore them at all ... those nicks, dings and dents were all EARNED with good old-fashioned hard work!
She and I would like to display the knives in a wall hanging shadow box, beneath glass, if possible. There are 12 knives altogether, and I don't know how to best mount them. I definitely don't want the "wired to the backboard" look, as if the knife has been hung in a noose.
Anybody have any good ideas? Pictures?

I just finished, well have almost finished building this, but you can buy them anywhere. I am going to put two of those saw tooth picture frame hangers on it and hang it on the wall. The foam hold the knives in place just fine, just don't open it while it is hanging! Ironically this one contains Schrades as well...
My kid brother accumulates knives (he's a good kid!), but he collects old beat-up advertising knives (Not even the good ones, alas. . . ). A couple years ago for Christmas, I swiped about 24 of them. I miled down a piece of maple to the right thickness, cut out windows for the knives, attached a plywood back, and lined it all with felt. A bit of quick work produced a glass door (basically I made a picture frame for the door), and my Christmas shopping for him was done.
No reason you couldn't do the same thing. Figure out the size you need, then buy a picture frame that matches the room decor, in the correct size. Make a quick-and-easy French-fitted case like described above, line it with felt.
Do the lining the easy way. Finish the top surface (varnish, lacquer, whatever). Glue the felt on the sides of the cutout. Trim top and bottom. Attach the picture frame using screws from the back (two screws is enough). Cover your ENTIRE back with felt. Install your knives, then attach the back to the cutout board with screws.

The "carry cases" on there are exactly what I've been looking for so thanks for that. Oddly enough I live in a place called Redhill in the UK ;]
However, once again a site that only appears to ship stateside! Having such a hard time finding anything of the sort over here in England! Or a website which will ship to England without a massive price tag!

Here is a case that I bought at a yard sale for a couple dollars.It was originally used to house those little collector spoons so the slots in the cross pieces are round.This proved to be ideal for my collection of letter opener knives and mechanical pencil knives.With a little work you could probably enlarge the cutouts to accomodate a knife blade.The wall mounts are already included.
