Old Time Red Stag is actually a rare variation of Sambar Stag. No one knows for sure how it aquired its red tint, but it is believed to be a natural occurance. There have been futile attempts(IMO) to duplicate this material in recent years/c1990s. From my experience the real deal usually occurs early XX era and earlier. When you are holding real red stag you want have to ask. Sorry I don't have a pic

Just looking at the picture , I say Stag but not Red Stag. If I'm looking at the tang stamp correctly it starts with a 5. ( Not a great picture though of the tang )

Let me start off by saying this is my knife. If you want to call it Red or Red Tint it's still RED in color to the stag. You will find this on some USA to 10dot Case Stag Knives, they will have yellow and red color to them. Some people call them Red Stag or Red Tint Stag. It has something to do with the dye Case used back in that time frame. To me myself the Red adds something the others don't have. I all so have a 5488 listed. Thanks

Red Stag is a European deer whilst a Sambar Stag is native to India. Both have successfully transplanted beyond their normal ranges into other countries.

Have no clue about the aforementioned color variations.

Paul there are a couple of pictures of the old red stag in the color section of Sargents latest book (7th Ed). I'm pretty sure that the word "Red" was referring to the color and not the species of deer. If it were that simple the recent red stag put out in the 90s wouldn't have to be dyed that artificial red color and we would be able to bring back that beautful Red Stag of the Old Days. Believe me if Case knew how to get a hold of some Red Stag like you seen on old WRS, Bradfords, and Testeds they would ::tu::

Maybe this will shed some light on the subject, straight from " Case College ", not my words, their's :

5 - Stag - Naturally shed or dropped deer antlers are used for the Stag handles in Case knives. The most desirable Stag comes from the Sambar or Chital deer in India. Stag covers are burned lightly during the completion process.

5 - XX Prime Stag - Genuine India Stag with an extra rough texture - the best of the best.

M5 - Midnight Stag - Genuine Stag except it is treated with a black dye and the covers do not get burned during completion.

R5 - Red Stag - Genuine stag except ithe stag is treated with a red dye and the covers do not get burned during completion.

V5 - Vintage Stag - Genuine Stag that is not dyed or burned during the manufacturing process, but is given extra buffing and hand finishing.

6 - Bone - Procured from Brazil, the shin bone of the Zebu cattle are the main source of bone suitable for Case bone handle materials.

With all due respect...you can't use the Case College on older knives. The way Case is making handle material today is entirely different than what they did years ago.

The Red Stag that has been made over the last fifeteen years or so is dyed. The older Red Stag from the Tested and XX era had a natural red tint to it. I've not seen any stag knives from the USA or 70's era that I would call red. However, there are a lot of dealers that call knives red stag that I wouldn't, just an opinion.

I personally wouldn't call the knife in the auction a "Red Stag" but a lot of reptuable dealers would. It is most certainly nicer than the average stag and the front side does have some red tint to it. It really gets down to what you like and what you want. The knife in the auction is very nice and has great stag.

Hello all, I'am showing a Case Stag that is very pretty. It has a couple tiny spots of red on the back and one on the mark side. I'am not naive enough to think this is Red Stag, just though it
would fit in here. Hope it shows up well.

Yeah, that's right Perry but if you've ever noticed that's usually only when they are selling but when they're buying its another story    ::nod:: ::nod::

Any Stag is ok with me!! Here's one they call Red Stag. By the model # 52100 its India Stag. It don't have a R in front of the 5. The card I got with the knife says Red Stag, so Is it or isn't it? Either way it is a keeper. Ed
