when you go in your backyard or your workshop, maybe you're out in the wide open country with trees and a creek or you have that "go to" place to relax and unwind outside and there's no crime, BLM, critical race theory, Antifa, and the other ilk. You go to that place and you'd have no clue or idea of anything wrong. I know when I step outside in my wide open country, it seems like an oasis now more than ever.

It's clean and convenient and the sun and the moon shine on it in their hour.

Where I came from they would call that a lake. Very nice.

When I think about it, I don't really have any perfect spot or place. I'd like to say it is outside in front of my house but there are always so many people around that it is not often peaceful there. We live close to our neighbors and there is a playground right in front of our house. Sometimes on Saturday or Sunday mornings it's peaceful there. Then I enjoy sitting there.

But if I could choose a place it would be somewhere where there is water. A stream, pond, lake, river, ocean, something. And nobody else around unless it was my wife. And if I had a fishing pole I'd like it even more. I don't even have to catch any keepers. A few sun fish or some snapper would be enough to keep me happy.

Back in the early years of our marriage, my wife and I used to drive out into the country to a little farm my grandfather owned. It has a creek running through it, a small barn, a pond, and up on the hilltop, a view that lets you see for miles off to the west. We had a couple of beagles, and we'd take them out there to run rabbits while we hung out enjoying the view. One day my wife said, "Wouldn't it be great to live in a place like this?"
Fast forward a few years and I bought the land from my grandfather and three years later had our home built right on that spot where we used to hang out listening to the beagles run. We've lived here for thirty-five years now, and I have never once regretted making this our home. I can sit on the front porch and see a few houses along the road, but none are closer than 1/4 mile away. I can sit out back and not see any houses at all, just trees, grass and grazing cattle. We are on a dead-end road with only ten homes spread out over about 1 1/2 miles so there's never much traffic. I have fantastic neighbors too. This is my little slice of paradise.

My wife and I bought our place in the country in 1975. B.C. (Before Children ). We bought the whole place at the time for about the cost of a vacant lot in the city. For 34 years I commuted to my job in the big city, but every day when I came home I felt like I was on vacation, at least for a few hours. We raised our boys here, now we are enjoying it with our grandkids. These pictures, all taken on the ranch, say it better than I could ever put it into words.

Tom, if I was in your location I would be looking for a little place in the Black Forest area. My wife and I once spent several vacation days relaxing at a small countryside Gasthof im Schwartzwald, southwest of Titisee. It was not in any town, just along one of the local paved roads between two small towns. When vacationing in Germany we never made a hotel reservation, instead we just stopped wherever we liked it and found a room. Never had a problem doing that.

On this occasion it was late afternoon, we saw the small hotel, Gasthof Talblick, on the side of a hill overlooking a beautiful valley. We turned in to the driveway going up the hill to the hotel and stopped in the small parking area. There was a man on a ladder doing some work on the roof of a barn. He said “Guten Tag!” and came down the ladder. I asked him (in my poor German) if there were any rooms available. He replied (in German) yes we have rooms available, but there will be no food served today because this is my wife’s day off. But there is a very good restaurant just a few kilometers farther down the road where you can have supper.

Then I asked him if beer was available. He looked at me as if I had just asked if he had killed his wife! Then he laughed and said “Naturlich! Immer Bier!!” Translation: “Of course, there is always beer!” (implied - “What a dumb question. What kind of place do you think this is?”)

We took a room on the upper floor with a balcony overlooking the valley. No television, no telephone, no WI-FI, - just a clean, comfortable room. That evening we went to the nearby village restaurant and had an excellent meal. When we returned and came into the hotel the innkeeper and his wife were seated in the lobby watching television (as it turned out, the only television on the property). She immediately jumped up from her chair, went to the kitchen, and brought back two bottles of cold beer!

We stayed there 3 nights and enjoyed every minute. Neither the innkeeper nor his wife spoke English. Somehow she and my wife (who speaks no German) had great conversations. There was a small chapel and a spring house on the hill behind the hotel. The natural spring with clear cold water coming out of the hillside, ran down the hill into the creek that runs through the valley. I sat on the balcony and marveled at the guy cutting hay with a tractor on the side of the steep hill, wondering how he kept from turning it over.

So if I was in your shoes and could afford it (have no idea what a place there would cost), that would be where I’d be. Sorry about the nostalgic ramblings - wish I remembered the location better.

I don't have any spaces like the ones mentioned in this thread, so I am envious. I live far enough outside of town where the neighbors aren't on top of us, but all within eye and ear shot. But I do have a little space...my favorite time of the year is when it is nice enough outside that I have the screens on the front porch, and I can sit out there and relax.

Other than that, my workshop is my escape place for peace and quiet

Sounds like a wonderful place Ken. I love springs & streams and any other kinds of water. And Beer is actually considered a basic food group in Bayern. Many work places still allow people to drink a beer on their lunch break as long as they don't over do it. Like where I work. The guys there often pop a top in the afternoon hours. (I don't drink anything anymore.) Long story.

Biggest problem in my life is lack of funds. If I had the money and I wanted to stay in Germany I would probably move somewhere close to the North Sea. I Love the ocean!

Here's my story. A little more than a year ago, nearing the end of the covid fiasco, I found myself depressed and just generally unhappy. I had lived my entire life in the suburbs around Atlanta , Ga. and could barely believe what the area had evolved into. Just like Jed I packed my ole truck and got the hay out. I moved up to north Georgia in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. Here's my modest little home and old wore out pickup but now all I have to do if I get depressed is walk down the street for these sights that sustain me now.
