30's Winchester

Post by CarbonFan »

I am in no way implying that this knife is or is not a fake. I'm just posting this to ask those who are more knowledgeable than me to take a look at this one.
It seems to be in awful good shape to be an original Winchester. What say ye?

I am not familiar enough with authentic Winchester knives, so take anything that I say about this one with a grain of salt. More likely, with a teaspoon of salt! Anyway...

I do not see the tell-tale signs of tampering that I see in so many counterfeits. The tang does not appear to have been shaved, and the tang stamp looks crisp.
The blades look to almost have a mirror finish, and I am not used to seeing that on original knives. So it might have been polished, but I don't think that it was buffed to death, at least. But then again, these may have had shinier blade finishes, I just don't know.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chine in soon and give better information. Merry Christmas!

I collect Vintage Winchester Knives and I have looked at this knife. As far as looks go, it looks partially correct but all of the books I have show that Winchester Never produced a Pattern 2896. Shown in the pics are a couple comparable knives from my collection. English Jacks 2905 and 2907. Notice on both of my original knives that the secondary pen blade is full stamped by Winchester on the tang. The knife being auctioned has no stamp at all, not even the single word "Winchester", which some knives have. This is a red flag. Also on the knife being auctioned, the shield has the squared shoulders as opposed to the sharp shoulders on the shields on my knives. The squared shoulders shield was used on some Winchester knives but it is uncommon. I won't be bidding on this knife. ::td:: Mike

For years Blue Grass Cutlery owned the license to remanufacture the Winchester knives. Didn't take a lot of time to study the OP, but it looks as if the tang stamp is the same.

I agree with all Desert Golfer has said. The lack of the pen blade stamp, no asociated pattern number, no etch on a mint appearing blade. That's three strikes with more to attribute to this knife. Looks like a Primble/Boker knife to me. ::td::
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Excellent Information Guys!!! A special Thanks to Desert Golfer! This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping to see.
I was thinking that the secondary blades should have been stamped, but I learned so much more from you guys. This one made my Spidey-senses tingle!!

Be wary of any offering from this seller. Sells some good knives but also offers some cobbled junk. My advice when buying from him is, be sure you know what you’re doing. He does offer returns and refunds. But to use it you have to know enough to ask for it. ::facepalm:: Returns only help if you know the item is bad.

very good advice Mubleypeg .I have 2 knifes purchased from this seller .Both were represented as being western boulder Colorado .One I believe is indeed as represented but the the spay blade was a tad bit short ,reshaped , and bent .after a couple days correspondence he agreed to refund my purchase price less the shipping charges and taxes .I decided to just keep the knife because at the time I was perfectly satisfied with knife number 2 bought on the same order .That was until I received my copy of the knife makers who went west arrived in the mail 6 months latter and the number 2 knife could not be found in the 1950 -61 catalog pages as it should have been.lol It was then I took a better look at the knife and realized the tang stamp didn’t look like any of my other western boulder knifes and I had been hoodwinked . On the bright side I think I may have a good example of what I think is a shaved tang that has been cold stamped to study .lol

If you don’t mind-what are the tell tale signs of tampering you look for? I’m still learning & hoping not to ever be taken. Thank you & keep looking up.

The only thing I see questionable on the whittler pattern is that it would normally have a copinig blade instead of the pen blade. In my experience coping blades are often the most worn or misshapen blade in a multi blade knife. The flat edge profiles lend themselves to this. Could be that the pen blade is a replacement. Then again maybe this pattern was at times made with the pen blade. ::shrug::
