Schrade 61OT unusual shield

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Schrade 61OT unusual shield

Post by rea1eye »

I picked up this 61OT the other day. The shield is different (has some
coined patterns) than my other OT's.

Has anyone seen this before?

The shield is not 100 % flush with the covers ( just slightly raised )

I'd say the original one fell out and it was replaced with the present one. That shield looks brand new. Notice the rounded edges of the handle material in the shield cavity around the outside of the present shield. That's probably pocket wear that occurred during the time the shield was missing. Looks like the new shield is a bit smaller than the original. The shields on the production knives were heated into the delrin making a tight seal around the outside. There are some serious gaps around this one.

Agreed Eric. ::tu::

I agree that it looks like a replacement shield. Just so you know, those shields were used on the "Complimentary" knives handed out by Schrade to lucky individuals. And they were used on other limited editions, Like the Old Timer Classics. Below are some examples. I didn't find a 61OT Complimentary knife in my files. That's not to say there isn't one out there somewhere. ???

Very nice group shown; thanks! The 1985 red bone series of the 3 sizes of stockman also had that shield. I have never seen an example of the 61OT with one of those shields.

I neglected to post my usual disclaimer and mention that I don't own any of the knives I posted. They are just from hundreds of photo files I have saved on my laptop. Although, I did remember this one that I own after I posted the others. It appears to be an "unfinished" limited edition of some sort. The price was right.

Good stuff. I have a digital collection of knives I don't own or no longer own, as well. I do still have this one.

That's a very nice set you have! I used to have a few of the red bone Heritage knives, but not any that have the shield we're talking about. And not a full set. Just a few in individual boxes from different years. Wish I still had the whittler. It was my favorite.

I think you are correct Eric. This knife was in rehab. I still like the knife
though. That shield caught my eye.
