Yesterday there were two big fires, one at Rome, TX about 20 minutes from me and in Runaway Bay just west of Decatur, TX. That one some residents had to evacuate their homes because of the fire danger.
Today at about 12:30 the temp was over 100 and suddenly we smelled smoke. Cheryl went outside and yelled fire so I dialed 911 and fire units were already on the way. The field just across the road from our group of houses was burning. The next thing I knew there was a helo in the air over us so I turned on the TV and sure enough it was one of the DFW stations reporting. I was about ready to leave because with my COPD my lungs can't handle that smoke, but firefighters soon had it under control and thought it was out so they moved on to other fires in the area, but around 4:00 it flared back up.
We have had no rain to speak of, triple digit temps and a wind that can help spread a fire real fast. I hope I don't wake up in the middle of the night and this one starts again. Like in several locations our situation right now is very dangerous and if that fire had jumped the road there very well could have been several houses burned including mine. People have got to be very, very cautious in everything they do when conditions are this extreme. We are praying for rain, lots of rain at this point.

Re: GRASS FIRES!
David, I hope you guys stay safe.
I prefer summer over winter generally, but this summer in North Texas has just been miserable. 105 to 107 every day and no rain. My yard looks like Death Valley - everything is dry and crunchy. And no relief in the forecast any time soon.
I was up north of Decatur this afternoon for Sporting Clays league. It was a mite toasty out there today.
If you have to be out in the heat, I highly recommend these cooling towels. We get these wet, wring them out, and hang them around our neck while shooting. Evaporative cooling. Helps a lot!

Thank you Mike, BTW I once used a similar towel product when I worked outdoors. Were you at that range up HWY 51 near the raceway?Unk wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 3:13 am David, I hope you guys stay safe.

Re: GRASS FIRES!
That's terrible, David, but glad it didn't reach your house. With all the rain we have been getting, it's hard to believe it's that dry in your neck of the woods. We had some heat last week, but this week has been mild and wet.

Re: GRASS FIRES!
Thanks for your prayers and well wishes everyone. There was still one brush truck out there this morning putting out hot spots that were still burning. We're okay but it could very easily happen again anywhere around here.

Yes, we shoot at Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds. Great place to shoot. They have a Spring, Summer, and Fall league: https://fossilpointe.net/
