Smith and Wesson Fans?

Hey guys,

I inherited a S&W Model 10, .38 special, six shot on what I think is a K-frame.

It was my father's, uncle's sidearm during the second world war (or so the story goes) when he served in some function or other at the pentagon.

Unfortunately, it has a barrel length of 4" which changes it's classification from "restricted" to "prohibited"...and as such, I cannot keep in unless I can prove it was manufactured prior to 1946. This is a Canadian law....

It's serial number is 9765XX and I believe it to be a model 10. I also believe that the story is true.

While we are at it, I have a Beretta .25, model 950 (I think) that I also need to prove year of manufacture. It's likely not from pre-1946, but thought I would ask anyway. serial G275XX.

Both of them are in very, very good condition, with minimal rounds thru them.

It may be a Military and Police .38 manufactured from 1915 to 1942. This would fit with the history of the gun and the serial number which I checked in the Smith and Wesson book I have. If you must prove the guns age I would send away for a "factory letter" from Smith and Wesson. They can verify the age and exact type of piece you have. Check the S&W website for how to get a letter. Go to http://www.smith-wessonforum.com/index.php join up and post as you did here. Leave out the last 2 numbers of the serial number and replace them with x's. I'd advise that you do that here as well.

Also check it for unit/ branch of service stampings or markings other than the regular run of the mill S&W markings.

See what they can do for you and let us know how that puppy is.
