Dan, that Bel air Convertible is my favorite out of all of the cars that have come thru the shop . It’s like the iconic American car and reminds me of better times .
Have heard of the Woodward Dream cruise. It’s also on brothers list of car events to attend someday . Take care over there my friend .

This is my toy. My dad bought it back in 1997 or 1998 as a father son type of project to do with my older brother and I. I was probably 12 or 13 at the time? It’s a 1979 Malibu wagon. Kind of an oddly optioned car. Factory 4 speed, air conditioning, crank windows, tilt wheel, power steering, and radio delete. If I could do it all over again I’d would’ve left the car completely original but back then the GM gbody platform hadn’t really become super popular like it is now. My dad originally built a pretty mild 350 and bought an aftermarket clutch for it. Took it to the drag strip a couple times and some car shows. My brother wanted to go faster so he talked my dad into buying a 9 inch ford rearend and they put in a 4.56 gear and posi. Didn’t have enough motor for that gear so a sizeable flat tappet cam went in, different intake, and bigger carburetor. Then it sat in my dads garage and never moved. The tags on it expired in 2003. He got on a big mopar kick since then and I have some pictures of his toys. His current being a 1968 coronet with a 440. I’ve always liked the wagon and a couple years back he just handed it off to me and said get it out of his garage. I got it out and started and washed it off. Took it for a drive and within 10-15 minutes I decided 4.56 wasn’t as much fun to my now 37 year old ears as it was when I was a teenager and that’s when it all started. I took the rearend apart and had a set of 3.89’s put in to make it more cruise friendly. Then put in some 31 spline moser axles. The car had stock wheels so I decided to put some shiny ones on and a set of 26x9 Mickey Thompson et street slicks and was ready to get it back in shape. Then I started reading. Turns out the factory saginaw 4 speeds in the gbody cars don’t really like any power/weight/traction so i started to second guess my tire purchase. Manual transmission gbodys, especially wagons are very rare and I didn’t want to destroy the saginaw since it was the only original piece of the drivetrain that I had left. It was having a fuel pressure issue with the electric Holley pump so I started to dig into that. I had it up on my brothers rack and noticed a wet spot on the tank. Then I noticed the body bushings were pretty shot and said the heck with it and took the body off. Ordered a new set of bushings, then a new gas tank, then a new fuel line, then a new mechanical fuel pump to do away with the electric one. While the body was off I power washed the frame and sanded it then primered it and painted it. Ran new brake lines and front brakes. I’d never seen rotors like that with the wheel bearing in them and my dad really enjoyed showing me how to pack them with grease……by hand…. Things were going smooth but I still had that transmission to worry about. The gbody saginaws are built specifically for the cars and the shifters don’t mount on the tail of the transmissions like they do on most other vehicles. I came across a smoking deal on a brand new Richmond super t-10 plus and bought it. Luckily I managed to meet a guy that helped me with a custom shifter and custom made brackets that allowed me to use the super t10 without cutting the floor all up. I could use the factory hole and keep the bench seat which was an absolute must for me. Input shaft splines are different between the super t10 and saginaw so I figured what the heck and just bought a new steel flywheel and a McLeod super street pro clutch for it. Oh yea, the output shaft splines are different too so I had a completely new driveshaft made with 1350 u joints and all spicer yokes. I just gave my steering column to the neighboring mechanic who claims he can fix it and that’s all I’m waiting on now besides for bleeding the brakes and changing all of the fluids. Someone broke into the car and tried to steal it back in the late 90’s and the steering column is busted up. Hasn’t been started with a key since then. The manual trans tilt columns for gbody cars are like hens teeth but I want to keep mine in the car busted up or not. Once I got working on the car things just kind of spiraled out of control but I’m sure older guys that have done this kind of thing before know all too well about it. I’ve helped my dad and brother do a lot of car work in the past but this was my first time being in charge and doing what I could unless I got stuck. Eventually I want to switch to rear discs and I want the car to make just 1 1/4 mile pass at 12.99 or faster before it’s retired from racing and only on car show duty. I’m already looking into a new set of heads for it which should help me reach my goal. Maybe I’ll put power steering back on too. My girlfriend thought I was crazy for dumping all of that money into it but the car means a lot to me and makes me think back to how much fun I had with it with my dad and brother. It’s no show car and it’s not even “fast” by todays standards but I don’t care about any of that. I just want to get it going after 20 years of sitting and get my old man out to some car shows again.

Buu good looking ole wagon, and sounds like you're making some smart upgrades, I'd have to go back with the power steering but then I'm 78 yrs old, there was a time that you couldn't give me a automatic trans or power steering. Good job have fun driving it.

Did a bit of pinstriping(double medium & dark brown) on the reveal and trunk of my friend Mike's Coast to Coast 34 roadster yesterday. Car color is a heavy metallic silver w/ a brown overtone that just explodes in the sunlight! Hopes the interior will be finished in time for the Detroit Autorama in March.

Did a bit of pinstriping(double medium & dark brown) on the reveal and trunk of my friend Mike's Coast to Coast 34 roadster yesterday. Car color is a heavy metallic silver w/ a brown overtone that just explodes in the sunlight! Hopes the interior will be finished in time for the Detroit Autorama in March.

I have no idea other than it's late 30's I believe, there may have been a placard that said but I'm not sure. She's a beauty as is the '57 but that ole Buick is a car of my childhood it's the one I'd take home if I could.

Here's a photo I took in Pigeon Forge a few weeks ago. I was standing around waiting for the women to do their shopping and seen a couple of ole cars across the road.
This ole 55 Plymouth looks pretty good from a distance, you don't see near as many of them as you do the ford's and chevys.

1955 was a big year for Chrysler and Plymouth . Check out allpar.com. A brief overview of that year for there new look. Think the Belvedere was the tri color . Good ? about Ford and Chevy . Might dig into that ,maybe in 57 or 58 there was a tri color special order ?

I was in Pigeon Forge last week, had to come home before the show took place but there was lots of ole Ford pickups in town before the show.
