This pair of Kalij Pheasant hens wandered into my yard this afternoon to find out what the weedwhacker might have uncovered.

Just a couple of lady friends showing a lot of eyeshadow and doing a little grocery shopping of a Saturday afternoon!

Q, I just wondered if those are someones birds or if they are breeding in the wild in Hawaii. I don't believe it is a native species. I used to raise exotic pheasants.

Non-native. Introduced to Hawaii in early 1960s as a game bird from Southern Asia. Now, as with most introduced species, they are considered invasive and feral.

All day has been an enjoyable circus around the bird feeder. The number of visitors keeps expanding. Had 3 male Cardinals and a female. Today there was no fighting like the other day when the 1 regular was joined by a newbie provoking a long fight. Maybe today it was just too cold to expend energy fighting.

A surprise was two Northern Flickers who spent much of the afternoon with us. KY is within their winter range but I do not recall ever seeing them here during this time of year.

Many sparrows of several species. Difficult for me to identify more than a couple and I am hopeless with the females. Have a couple of House finches with their red heads. Wish I had more but last year I had none so I will be content.

Mahalo, Ivoryman. Yeah, these Kalij pheasants are very skittish as well. The only reason I was able to photograph them so close is because they were right outside my window and I happened to be holding my phone at the time. The cock showed up with the hens this morning but as soon as I made the slightest move to grab my phone, they all took off. One time, I actually got the cock to snatch a piece of bread from my outstretched hand but it required setting out a trail of bread leading up to the lanai where I had to sit absolutely still for about 30 minutes before he felt safe enough to make the snatch. The cock is really pretty...shimmering royal blue & green plumage like a peacock. I'll get a pic of him eventually...they pass through my yard regularly at different times of the day.

Killer story Bro, I have acclimated a few birds over the years. Cool you got him to eat out of your hand. The color doesn't really come through on my end but they still look pretty and elegant. Love big birds. Thanks for the pics and details. ::tu:

Great photos fellers, we had a near tragedy the day before yestiddy. A Redbrested woody flew into our backdoor and really stunned itself. The boss picked it up and brought into the house and checked it over. It didn't seem to be hurt too bad, couldn't find anything that seemed broken. The boss held it awhile and it seemed to revive a little so she put a cup towel in one of my old insulated Crocs and put it on the back porch in the sun.
We kept watch on it for a couple of hours and as it was getting out of the sun we decided to move it over to get it into the full sunshine ,when we did it decided it was time to move on. It flew up to the gazebo and pecked it several times to clear out the fog and flew away. Whew I sure hope it makes out okay.

Interesting seeing the different kinds of Pheasants. Been seeing the RingNecks in the campground across the road, too far away to get pictures but they drive my dog crazy. She wants out to chase them.
This fellow sent me looking to ID. Knew he was a woodpecker. Red-bellied it is. I’m on the very northern edge of the normal range. Along with Downies they keep the suet feeder busy.

The ever elusive Kalij Pheasant cock finally showed up outside my window yesterday but he's so skittish as soon as I reached for my phone to take a picture, he darted behind the areca ferns.

I'll keep trying, but for now this is the best I could do.
