I like Changers. The two reservations I have about them are the whole kit is heavy on long hikes and bulky on my belt. The knife in a Folding Hunter size pouch with a second blade squiriled away in my pack works better. I've gotten more use out of the fillet blade like OLD CUTER's has than the gut hook like the blade in enuf's kit.

There is a light weight version that I've only seen pictures of. Early production used thinner blades that do not interchange with later Changers. Some years blades were polished bright. Some years they had the coarsest finish Case ever produced. Most are in between. Some of the roughest Changer blades came with the most expensive stag handles so I don't see any logic to it. On the good side all the Changer blades I've handled locked up tight with no side play.

I had always considered the blade in question as a boning blade rather than a fillet because it is not very flexible like a fillet would be. I had not noticed that this blade is actually stamped "utility." Also note that 3 of my blades have the same dots year code, but the drop point is different. Case using up blades from the previous year?

enuf"s pouch has the pocket arrangement introduced approximately the fourth year of production. The pouch was remodeled later than the change to thicker blade stock. Early pouches stacked all blade slots on top of the knife. Consequently early pouches stick out further from your belt.

Whether it was designed to be a boning or fillet blade the utility blade is the best Changer option for filleting. It's also the best substitute for a kitchen paring knife and most camping knives get used preparing meals more often than any other chore. That's the main reason I take it when I only carry two blades.

My sheath has a small piece of Velcro loop material glued to the top of the 3 individual blade compartments. When I got the set out to photograph for this thread, I noticed that one of them had come loose from the adhesive failing. It looks like these were made from a 3/4" square of self stick Velcro loop, cut to 1/4" wide and stuck on. The blades would rattle terribly in the sheath without these if you had it on the belt and were walking. Are they something Case did at the factory, or has someone added these?

I have a Case "Caliber" Mako folding knife - all zytel frame. Very light, blade somewhat thinner than regular model. Seems like I have seen an X-changer in this format - or maybe not?

I looked in mine and it too has the fuzzy Velcro tabs in there. Yours has just come out is all.

I do not know what Changers Case still makes but they used to make a less expensive light weight Changer. I've not seen one in person, only in ads. I think the handles were only two synthetic plastic slabs with the pins running between them and the backspring and lock assembly. Their pouches were fabric, maybe nylon.

Thanks redrider! Honestly, it's probably more of a coincidence that I don't have any with the guthook. I have just picked them up over the years when I could get a good deal on them. Guess I never found the right deal on one with the guthook.
