Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
I racked up at the Beulah Knife show today!
I had these two creepy guys that kept following me around. Then realized they were my brother and my Dad, so it was okay. Seriously, we enjoy this knife show every year. It is just an excuse to spend time together, and a chance for me to buy some Parts & Repair knives.
As far as knives go:
Left column starting at the top:
1- Rough Rider RR043. My Dad bough some of these and gave one each to me and my brother.
2- Gerber multitool.
3- Buck 110, in about as bad a condition as I have ever seen.
4- Moraknive. Who doesn't love a Mora?
5- Ozark Trail fixed blade that my brother found lying in the road. It has been run over and needs to be rehandled.
Center column:
1- Camco camper with "Poll Parrot Shoes" shield
2- Camillus 23. It has full blades and some shrinkage to the handles. There are no advertisements printed on the handle! This and the Buck 110 are the only knives in all of this that were over $10.
3- Colonial Coke-Bottle pattern. I just love the pattern, have not owned one, and I think it may look good with new handles.
4- Boker USA stockman, marked "85 (Tree) 85" on the back tang. A little worn, but useable.
Right Column:
A Kutmaster, a Klein and two Camillus electrician's knives. I have quite a few if these, but they are just fun to modify and rehandle.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Nice haul! Surprised that Boker still has its shield. Seems near every well-used Boker USA that I see has lost its shield.
Be careful with that Gerber, though. The early models of the Multiplier had handles that were a little too close together when the pliers were deployed, and it will pinch one heck of a blood blister on your hand (don't ask me how I know...). Later on, Gerber tweaked the pliers so that the handles were further apart when the pliers were slid out.

Nice haul, Reverand! What in the heck did someone do to those bolsters on the Buck 110?

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
I bought this homemade lockback folder yesterday at a second hand store. 5 5/8' closed.
It locks up nice and tight with no wiggle at all. No makers name.
I think it has decent steel; it sharpened as a good knife steel would.
A previous owner, crudely, took to the spring pin with a file. I believe the spring pin turned as spring pins will.
I sprayed it with isopropyl alcohol and washed it to get all the mucus off it and let it dry and sharpened it and oiled it and rubbed the handle with Odie's oil. $10. It's a good straight knife now.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
I honestly don't know what they did to it. Ot looks like a bad case of road rash, except I would think that the handles would have been busted up of it had been run over by cars.
I am torn between trying to sand it smooth (removing a LOT of handle in the process), or smoothing it a little bit then trying to cover the scratches by cutting some pattern into the surface.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Reverand, a suggestion; you might try stippling the bolsters with a small ball pein.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Here's a recent find of mine - an Empire. I've read the history of Empire and understand this knife likely dates from 1890 - 1930. I've not been able to find a photo of another with this pattern and these bolsters. It's 3-3/8" long. Has the tang stamp shown on all four blades. Anyone have an additional insight?

FRJ, an old woodworkers trick to remove dents in wood is to soak a cloth in water and place it over the area dented and apply pressure from a 'hot' iron and let the steam do it's work is raising the dent. Sometimes it takes several attempts to completely raise the dent. I hope this helps.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Thank you Louisville.Boy1947, as an old woodworker myself I have heard of that technique and never had to use it.Louisville.Boy1947 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 2:49 am FRJ, an old woodworkers trick to remove dents in wood is to soak a cloth in water and place it over the area dented and apply pressure from a 'hot' iron and let the steam do it's work is raising the dent. What I have here is wood removal and I can't fix that. It's just part of the furniture and I'm OK with that.
I appreciate the heads up though.

Thanks! Most of my older knives have some kind of "warts" and I'm ok with that. They've lived a long life.FRJ wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 4:05 amWhat a good looking Congress Empire you have there, timber22.timber22 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 2:16 am Here's a recent find of mine - an Empire. Glad you went to the gun show and found some great goodies!
At 1st look I thought the Case was red bone, but closer look showed wood, it's still a good one.
