Schrade 834B Smooth Black - not in catalogs?
I just got this Schrade NY USA 834 with smooth black handles.
The tang stamp is SCHRADE NY USA 834. The box says 834B.
I could not find 834 with black handles in any of the Schrade 70's to 80's catalogs - does anyone know the production years on this one?
My thought is, maybe it was a non-catalog item, made only for premium/advertising with handle imprints - and this one was an overrun since it has no handle imprints.
Second question - when did Schrade stop using the SCHRADE NY USA stamp and go to just SCHRADE USA?

Re: Schrade 834B Smooth Black - not in catalogs?
the B in 834 may stand for Black?
I think Schrade made the 834 from 1947 to 1983.
I think the tang stamp was used from 1973 till the plant was moved to China ( 2004).

p.s. Not an expert, but this is what my references show. References are sometimes
not correct.
perhaps the leaflet that comes with the knife would have a date somewhere on it?

Well, yes. I have owned hundreds of 834's, I have just never seen one with smooth black handles. Yes the B does stand for black, but the catalogs only showed the 834 in jigged brown and the 834Y in smooth yellow, never one in smooth black.rea1eye wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 9:10 pm the B in 834 may stand for Black?

The tang stamp was changed from SCHRADE WALDEN NY USA to Schrade NY USA in 1973. However, some time after that was changed simply to SCHRADE USA with the pattern #. I have been trying to find out when the NY was dropped from the tang stamp.

My sense is that the NY USA tang stamp was only used for a few years, say up until about 1976. No proof of that, just what I have noticed.

I cam to that same conclusion. I even asked someone who was a Schrade production employee during those years and he did not know.black mamba wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 4:30 am My sense is that the NY USA tang stamp was only used for a few years, say up until about 1976.
