Basket Case

Post by Whitneyrifle »

Found this poor thing on eBay. I can’t let Union Tidioute knives die like this, so I’m in the middle of bringing this one back to life. Looks like she will make a decent 4/8 when completed.

Back from the dead, it is now a 4/8 and sharpened, honed, and shave ready.

I love it! A great decision on the handle material, very eye-catching.

First and foremost that looks great! I am curious and have looked into restoration some over the years but what do you use for the pins and washers? Did you make the scales also or did you source them from another razor or buy them? Hope you dont mind the questions.

Best

All fair questions. The pins and washers you can purchase on Etsy or eBay. Just look for straight razor pins or straight razor repair kit. There are sets of pre cut and ready to use scales on both sites also. Just search for straight razor scales. If I am going for a custom color or custom scales, I look for knife scales or acrylic scales. This will give a wider secretion, and I will fabricate my own.
Also, FB has many groups dedicated to straight razor repair and wet shaving. You can PM if you would like more info.

Well done. Makes you wonder how anyone could have shaved with a frown like that. I guess the old hands were tough.
I ought to sort through my pile and see if there's any you might want to mess with. I've got about a 60 day rotation now and am pretty much out of the mood to rework any more.

I may be able to work on a few if you would like.

How did you cut that barbers notch in the end of that blade?

A small grinding barrel on the end of a Dremel. I would go for several seconds, then dip in water, then continue to desired depth.
