New to knife collecting so forgive my ignorance. I recently purchased this knife on feebay and upon further research I'm finding that this tang stamp may not be indicative of an authentic? Please reply before its too late so I can cancel my order ::paranoid::
Is it real or fake?
Thank you.

If underneath CASE XX there is a row of dots and under the dots U.S.A. then the shield and tang stamps are correct for a 1980s knife. Was it sold as anything else? The value of what is one of the most common 1980s patterns in that condition is not high enough to motivate counterfeiting.

Perhaps the experts will see something different.

Back of the sheepfoot blade is marked 6318 and underneath is lettered SHSR or SMSR. Curious if there's significance with these markings. I didn't pay much for it but wanted to know if its real.

If you zoom in on the photo, there doesn't appear to be any markings underneath the case xx stamp but its a pretty crumby photo to decipher.

Welcome to AAPK. I agree the knife is too new, the pattern too common, and the value too low for a counterfeiter to spend the effort to make a fake version. It’s just not worth it.

Answers to your questions can be found in the AAPK “Research” section, which can be accessed by clicking on it in the header at the top of this page. When the Research page opens, scroll down to the section on W.R. Case & Sons. Then click on the appropriate page to find answers to your questions.

It's a safe bet that it's stamped SHSP. SH means it has a sheep's foot blade. SP means it has a spey blade. Since you didn't pay a lot for it be happy thats it's a good knife from a well respected U.S. company, droop it in your pocket and enjoy it. Most of us get the most enjoyment out of our knives that are not too good to use.

Looks like a run-of-the-mill 1980's genuine Case knife to me, assuming the USA and dots below Case XX are there as the other poster said.

Would like to see pics of it cleaned up. Carbon steel Case knives are usually pretty good all around knives and can be made very sharp i.e. useful.
