Re: Old and Obscure Brands
A couple of days ago, my visit to the post office produced this "Deer Foot" pocket knife. This is my second pocket knife, in this "Deer Foot" pattern or style, to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the second "Deer Foot" example to join my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is an ERNST ROMMERSWINKEL, one blade, one tool (a corkscrew), two tang stamps, 5 3/8" closed, lever lock, "Deer Foot" pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp (football shaped) says, "ERNST ROMMERSWINKEL (over) SOLINGEN GERMANY" with "ERO" in the center. The main blade back tang stamp says, "MADE IN (over) GERMANY" My other "Deer Foot" pocket knife was posted, under this topic or thread, back on Saturday, August 3, 2024. This main blade does NOT have a half stop. This main blade does have a VERY GOOD opening snap. This main blade does have a VERY GOOD closing snap. The corkscrew opens and closes with NO problems. Overall, this pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. I cleaned the blade a little bit. I took some pictures and here it is.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Good morning,
I saw the post about Hollinger sheath knife – I also have an old Hollinger with leather handle and patterned leather sheath. Tang says Hollinger, does not say Fremont Ohio anywhere on the knife. Sheath and knife are both stamped with 13223. Overall length is 8 1/4 inches. Was wondering if anyone could direct me to a page or chart to help identify the model and date for this knife? I included a few pictures, hopefully they came through… Thank you in advance or any help, and have a great day!

Levine just says. Fremont, OH and "manufacturer?" and gives it a "high" value. c.1919. Houston Price gives the name and Fremont only. Good Luck with it. J.O'.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
This might be an old and obscure one. It is a single blade pen, 3 inches overall closed, with rat tailed bolsters. The name on the tang stamp appears to be "JOHN FALZ". None of the several books I have lists that name. Handle material appears to be bone.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Recently, my trip to the post office produced this lobster or gentlemans', pattern or style of pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the most recent example to be added to my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is an ORANGE CUTLERY COMPANY, one blade, one tool (a file with a blade tip), two tang stamps, 3" closed, lobster or gentlemans', pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "ORANGE (over) CUT. CO. (over) WALDEN, N.Y." The tool back tang stamp also says, "ORANGE (over) CUT. CO. (over) WALDEN, N.Y." The main handle side has a MASONIC symbol, logo, or emblem, with "Jr. O. U. A. M." (Junior Order of United American Mechanics). The main blade does NOT have a half stop. The main blade does have a GOOD opening snap. The main blade does have a GOOD closing snap. The tool does NOT have a half stop. The tool does NOT have an opening snap. The tool does have an OK closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

This 3 1/2" Jack is stamped D Scotten co Detroit Mich. The Goins entry is for the company name only, no dates or other info. I found a little online indicating that this was a very successful tobacco firm, and went by this name from 1882-1898. This knife should fall somewhere within that 16 year time span.

What a great old knife! The additional history is interesting.Waukonda wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 6:30 pm This 3 1/2" Jack is stamped D Scotten co Detroit Mich. Ike, I can't quiet make out the etch on the clip blade. I see "handed" maybe?

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Thanks for the comment, Philip. I can't quite make out the etch either. The last 2 words are "Hand Forged" but preceding that is something that ends in "L O". The first couple of letters are completely illegible, then there is what looks like a Y, followed by a hyphen, and then the L O.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Recently, my visit to the post office produced this multi tool, SCOUT KNIFE. It is definitely an OLD brand, it might even be considered an OBSCURE brand and it becomes my most recent example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the first example, of this particular pattern or style, to be added to my "foreign born" pocket knife accumulation. It is a WERWOLF, one blade, five tools (a cap lifter or bottle opener with screwdriver AND a PREST-O-LIGHT key, a can opener, and a punch or awl), one tang stamp, 3 3/4" closed (not including the bail), scouting or camping, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp (VERY FAINT) says, "WERWOLF (over) CUTL. WORKS (over) GERMANY" The shield says, "SCOUT KNIFE" The main blade has a WEAK half stop. The main blade has a GOOD opening snap. The main blade has a GOOD closing snap. The tools open and close with no issues. The punch or awl is copper colored on the back. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures, they do NOT do this pocket knife any justice, and here it is.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
I had this one out to post in another thread, so it should be here also. Mfrs Union Co. MOP 8 blade Congress. It was so unusual I paid $1 for it even though it has 4 of the 8 blades broken. 3 and 3/8 inch OAL closed. If a 2 blade is a half Congress, a 4 blade is a Congress, does 8 blades make this a double Congress?????

Second, "4 of the 8 blades broken"....is hilarious sounding. Like a silly hyperbole, or perhaps a humorous description of how I feel when I wake up in the morning, or maybe a description of a sub-standard intellect.
Third, I think it does make it a double congress in my completely uninformed opinion but, circling back now, you've only got 4 functional blades, so you're back at one fully functional Congress, which is more than we've ever had in 248 years of existence as a nation, so congratulations on the unique find.
Does that thing have 4 springs? It must be beefier than the side profile pictures suggest.

Re: Old and Obscure Brands
Sorry, my bad. I should have added these pics to my OP. It has 4 springs as shown in the pics. Also showing the 4 broken blades. Wouldn't one think that after you had broken 1 or 2 blades you would be more careful?? lol The MOP is intact on the pile side, cracked on the mark side. My understanding is that this tang stamp "Mfrs Union Co" has no connection to the Union / Kabar company. One of the intact blades is a nail file.ThatWeirdKnifeGuy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2024 2:46 amFirst off, super cool knife. Yeah 4 times is a tough way to learn the same lesson. It's wild there's any pearl at all after enough abuse to bust up 4 blades.OLDE CUTLER wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2024 2:36 pm Wouldn't one think that after you had broken 1 or 2 blades you would be more careful?? lol The MOP is intact on the pile side, cracked on the mark side.

A congress is a pattern no matter how many blades, I think modern Knife companies came up with " half congress" as a sales gimmick.OLDE CUTLER wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2024 12:11 am If a 2 blade is a half Congress, a 4 blade is a Congress, does 8 blades make this a double Congress?????
