KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY

I found these two after work today in a little shop near Birmingham. Please pardon the poor pics, this is on the console of my truck.
I got a good deal on the pair, and both are knives that I have been wanting:

An Old Crafty by Schrade. I have a few Shrade-made Craftsman knives, but this is my first with the "Old Crafty" shield. She is sadly in need of a good cleaning.


And a 1981 Case 6143 Grandaddy Barlow!

She also needs to be cleaned, but much more mildly. The delrin handles each have a pin crack at the tiny center pin.

That has go to be the find of the year, Dave, it appears to be in new condition without any signs of cracking in the MOP, and for that price, well...congratulations...is about all I can say.

Thanks guys. While I was in the shop I looked at a very dirty Remington Boy Scout that the owner wanted $125 for. I decided against buying that one but was going by the shop today and stopped and asked him his best price hoping it would be closer to $100. He said $75 so I bought it. It looked like it was missing a bail but the dark blades appeared full. When I got it cleaned up someone had skipped across the main blade with a Dremmel or something but didn't do any more than some cosmetic damage, but still is a little disheartening. The pins appear to have been tightened up some with a punch, but it still is a decent Remington with the scout shield and really nice scales so I'm happy I bought it.____Dave

My cousin Fred collects fixed blades so when he snags a folder we swap for whatever fixed blades I have. Today he gave me this old PUMA fish-knocker-scaler- weigher knife. Puma folks are familiar with these but for those who haven't seen one: the handle is about 6 ounces for clobbering a hot fish; the blade is calibrated to weigh fish by hanging them from the various notches with the knife suspended from the tang hole. (They usually have a ring in the hole with a lanyard; this one is missing. Kind of an oddity but fun for show and tell. J.O'.

That's a cool tool, J.O'., I see them listed occasionally at Arizona Custom Knives, and they have decent prices tags attached to them, I think they are or are becoming rare.
I remember using one of these while fishing with my Dad, and remember feeling badly about killing the fish that way, it felt too personal to me.
After that experience I now hold my caught fish's head underwater til it drowns, it takes a loooong time for them to go under, but it's more humane! lol! I'm joking in case you're not sure!

Thrift store finds. The knives and steel with the horn handle were in misc. kitchen utensil bins. For .75 each I couldn't walk away without something pokey. The "schrade finger copy" i bought without even seeing that sticker. I had only seen Japan on the tang and felt the nice wood handle. After seeing the sticker i inspected it closer and saw the faint maxam 420 stainless etch on the blade. The small honing rod is an eze lap diamond with brass screw on case. The slicer is a flint ecko and the serrated one is a Case p 251. The tip is bent, but it'll straighten or I'll reprofile it. In the giant bins full of plastic and China, I spotted the wood grain and the finger grooves.

Super cool knife. A must for anybody who likes fish knives. And what a great edc for self defense
