Nice group, Erwin, I too have both Appaloosa models and a bunch of other RR's, they're great knives!
If you can't get the large Bow Trapper cuz it's sold out, they usually have most models re-stocked fairly quickly, so don't give-up the hunt! I have the black model, you'll like it! ::tu::

That is a very nice group! The RRR Original Clasper has sold out and I doubt they will be made again. A RRR version of the Tater Skin Deer Slayer (or clasp knife) with the usual RRR D2 steel would be a good addition to the RRR line.

Hmmm ::hmm:: The 4 3/8" Bow Trappers that are available with sereral handles and blade steels are pretty substantial pocket knives.

The Appaloosa Bone and the Cinnamon Bone make for some really good looking handles! I have one in each handle.

That depends. I have a few Case knives and for the most part they are better than Rough Ryders. I also have some Case knives that were worse than some Rough Ryders. There is an overlap in quality at some point. I can show you some RRs in my collection that surpasses some Case knives in my collection. I’m willing to bet to anyone that has a bunch of knives from both makers will say the same. The best of RR is better than the worst of Case and they do it for 1/4 of the price. When you get a nice Case, it’s better than a RR. I’m speaking about normal RRs not the premium line like the Reserve. I only own one Reserve and it’s perfect but the price is getting up to Case range so I don’t consider them “value” knives anymore.

I made that statement over 9 years ago. I'll stand by it today.
Except for the Chinese made Queens which are probably made in the same factory as RRs.

I've owned a number of different RR and RRR models over the years and I will admit they are well made knives for bargain prices. For some reason, however, I'm just not drawn to them the same way I am drawn to Case, Queen, Schatt & Morgan and other brands. It's not necessarily because they're made in China, although I am generally uninterested in most Chinese made knives; it's something intangible that's hard to define. Someone on the forum once said that the problem with Rough Rider/Ryder knives is "they have no soul"; which pretty much sums up how I feel about them too. :|

These are my only two RRs: both Wharncliffe Swaybacks which I kept only because it's a pattern I collect. One of them originally came with Micarta covers that I had BIGHEAD replace with gnarly Amber Stag. To some degree, the stag lends it the "soul" it was lacking, IMHO ::nod::

OMG what an improvement - I share your love of swaybacks and Barry’s work - that’s a RR that I’d be proud to add to my collection - well done Q!

The 4 older Clasp Knives are for field dressing, skinning. and butchering. The new Tater Skin is for chasing after the deer and slaying it. I hope you're in better shape than I. SMKW has another Deer Slayer "coming soon" with colorful smooth plastic. Its anounced price is about $7 more than the Tater Skin was.

You bought two of the RRs that are sort of modern traditional. I would agree that some RRs and most modern traditional knives lack soul and that’s why I don’t buy the RR reserves. SS bolsters and Micarta covers kills most of the soul.

Try a traditional traditional from RR. Something with bone covers, brass liners and nickel silver bolsters and maybe even carbon steel blades. You might be surprised how much you like them and how much soul they can have.
A RR with those materials has more soul than a case with swirly plastic handles but that’s just my opinion.
