Ken, your project turned out very well indeed. A fine looking rifle in a serious caliber. At my age I tend to favor calibers that shoot a bit softer, the 270 Winchester being a favorite.
Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
One of the nice things about the 30-06 Springfield is the vast variety of loadings available for it. I have only fire 168 grain bullet through this particular rifle, I believe you could make up loads that push bullets from 100 to 220 grain.Quick Steel wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 5:49 pm Ken, your project turned out very well indeed. Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
I picked these up at a gun/knife show today.
Molds to make leather holsters.
I think they might be from the 30s-40s, but that's only a guess.
They are made of cast aluminum.
Looks like 3 Colts and a Smith & Wesson.
Pay no attention to the price tags I didn't pay anywhere near that.
Does anyone have any information about these?

Just an uneducated observation but it looks to me like the one in the 2nd picture should have the S&W tag on rather than Colt. It's a break open and if memory serves me, Colt didn't make revolvers like that in the 20th century. Like I said, an uneducated observation.

They all had Colt on the tags. I'm with you the break top gun is S&W.

I agree too, I get my S&W book out and figure out the model for you.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Does it appear to be for a small frame (32 cal), medium (38 cal) or large (44 cal)? The short barrel was throwing me off but for an open end holster it wouldn’t matter.

Yes, the small frame is .32 cal.
.32 Double Action. There are 5 models but the differences are so slight it wouldn’t matter as holster mold. Made from 1890 to 1919

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Just wondering if any of you AAPK rimfire shooters have the Ruger American 22LR rifle with synthetic stock and blue action? If so have you been able to get it to shoot a group?

Now that is one find!!! I never have seen a mold like that. I wonder if they were used in a leather factory that did large scale production, maybe with contracts for police departments, etc... etc...

My brother has that Ruger American and it is a consistanly fine shooter, outperforming his carbon fiber barreled high dollar rimfire. I am not sure what make ammo he shoots in it? All mine do best with CCI standard velocity, as is the 243 and creedmore Americans.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
The reason I was asking is I had one and it was the biggest piece of junk Ruger ever made. Should never have gotten out of the factory. After trying 16 kinds of ammo, the best group it would shoot at 50 yards was 3 and 5/8 inch with CCI STD VEL. By comparison I have a Ruger 10/22 of the same vintage that shoots that same ammo into 5/8 inch. When I got it out of the box, the magazine was stuck in the gun which required taking the bolt out and pushing the mag out from above. The black synthetic stock had some horrendous burrs around the mag well that had to be removed. I tried retorquing the 2 screws holding the action to the stock and varied the amount of torque to no avail. Finally gave up and it is on the used rack now at our local gunshop. Sure left a rotten taste in m mouth concerning Rugers.robpa wrote: ↑Thu Nov 14, 2024 2:30 pm My brother has that Ruger American and it is a consistanly fine shooter, outperforming his carbon fiber barreled high dollar rimfire. The Ruger American was supposed to be a lower cost alternative to the The Ruger 77 or Hawkeye as it is now called. The gun media pushes the story what a great rifle it is even though most knowledgeable riflemen hate it.
Nowadays gun writers all go along with what ever bull story the manufactures are spuing, that way they keep getting free ammo and greatly discounted firearms

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
That has always been my beef with gun writers. The articles they write on "gun tests" that they do are nothing more than multi page advertisements. In many cases they contact the manufactures to " test" a product, so the manufacturer sends them a specially prepared gun and free ammo. I do think the quality of Rugers products have declined since the founder Bill Ruger died. I had one of their plastic centerfire pistols also that was junk.ken98k wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 6:42 am The Ruger American was supposed to be a lower cost alternative to the The Ruger 77 or Hawkeye as it is now called. Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
I dont intend on gettin into a pizzen contest here but!.. I used to have a quite large ruger collection, just under 200 total. Some bonafide hard to come by pieces including the convertible bearcat. All the old red pad 77s, 35 SA revolvers, and a whole host of others. The 77s were mostly good shooters, some excellent, depending on who made the barrels. Ruger made no barrels then, only the actions. Most need trigger work. the 358 was probably the least accurate. The ruger precision in 243, 6mm and 6.5 mm creedmores were all top notch.Out of the box great. We have 4 ruger americans and every one is top notch, the newer ones have the better triggers. With some loads the 243 and 6.5 creed will hang right with the precisions. I tjhink they are top notch rifles. I do know one guy who got a real stinker tho in 308. As a matter of fact my bro had a 308 which was total scrap!
The American rimfire is a very good little rifle for general work. I wouldnt consider it a target rifle. I dont know about the ruger American rimfire precision but have talked to a couple guys who are happy with theirs. Now the new model American?? I dont like it much, for looks and ergonomics but I dont know a thing more than that about them?
