Damn celluloid

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

I got to doing a little thinking and I suspect this has been thought of and asked before - have we ever done a study on out-gassing compared to the Liner material and the blade material? And then what about the rivets or the bolsters that hold the scales on, what material are those? Just wondering if something is setting the celluloid off. ::shrug::

Rookie wrote: Sat Jan 20, 2024 3:33 am Regarding the Winchester's from the 80's and 90's, it was known that the material was likely to outgas overtime. My grandfather worked at the Queen factory at that time, and they warned the customer that the material was known to become unstable. But they were told to replicate the look of older knife handles, and if celluloid was the only way to get that look (gold flake, candy stripe, etc.) then use it anyways. The knives would last at least 20 years before signs of problems, so what's the big deal.

The customer's always right, if they are paying the bills.
Thank you very much for this information. You confirmed my suspicions that Blue Grass knew about the dangers of celluloid. Now I understand why they offer only 1 year warranty.

PLEASE!!!, enough with the celluloid posts! We ALL know that in SOME cases, CELLULOID has been and is still a stable material. We also know that in MANY, MANY cases, CELLULOID has been and is a VERY UNSTABLE, DESTRUCTIVE material and causes damage to the subject piece of cutlery and the surrounding cutlery. If you REALLY want to learn about the world of CELLULOID, OUTGASSING, CELLULOID OUTGASSING, etc., enter CELLULOID in the AAPK site search box. READ TO YOUR HEARTS' CONTENT.

It's amazing how many times the same questions are asked and answered on here.

This is an extremely rude post. How will AAPK grow if new members are intimidated in into not asking questions?
Not all are "experts" like some. I personally have gone back to look at some of my posts when I was a new guy.
I think what dumb questions I asked. I'm glad the members here treated me with respect. If you want to treat members this way go to BF where they treat new people in this manner.
By using this line of reasoning we can't have new post about cleaning, tang stamps, or any subject that's been discussed.

This is a true, heartfelt apology to EVERYONE involved in this topic or thread. Yesterday, I received some VERY disturbing news regarding a couple of my relatives. What the news was is personal. But, the way I handled the news was WRONG. I hit the bottle and I hit it hard. Again, I do apologize for my rude and uncalled for tirade.
Sorry. ::handshake::

Difficult times. My wife is going through it with her father, he is 84 and its about that time. Not, that this is your situation, but straining family times are never fun. I seriously wasn't intending to highjack the thread, totally forgot what area we were in, just went rabbit hunting. ::dang::

Takes a big man to admit being wrong and apologize. I don’t need to know what’s going on, but will be praying for you and your family.

Was in the garage today and found this pc. of tortoise shell variation that didn't hold up near as well as the candy stripe did. This has also been out there since about 2010. Still may be able to get a useable handle set from it.

I had the same camillus 3-1/4" faux abalone stockman & didn't know it was actually celluloid. Thought knife mfg's quit using that decades earlier. Wish I had that one back - like the blade grinds on that one ...

Below are a few pics of a knife that is just starting the outgassing process. The mark side is starting first as all the rust lines are on the mark side. Very faint lines, so look closely for the lines as the blade would be when closed. The knife is marked only USA, and has the shell handles attached by the inside tab method that Colonial used. Just bought this yesterday, so none of mine have been exposed to the pox.

That's what I stated in my post, probably Colonial because of the shell handle attachment method.
