My wife was garage sailing today and called me to come look at some knives , Case XX folding hunter , Case USA Moose, Case fixed blade and small Canton whittler.He said he has about 40 newer Case knives from 80s to 2000s he will be selling. Love it when the wife calls you to look at knives.

I'm confused. Did she fill an inflatable pool inside a garage then sail a small boat in the pool or step a mast onto a garage's roof then try to sail the garage around the block?

The 40 Case knives could be a stupendous bargain or not. The three Cases pictured have lost a lot of steel to an electric sharpener. However, most people with 40 knives only actually use and resharpen a small number of them.

I have yet to find a knife worth mentioning at a garage sale. I do better at gun shows. Not well enough to justify the gas and time by potential resale value but I'd go to them for coffee, cookies and to B.S. with the guys just to get out of the house. On the other hand, I find more good deals on knives at gun shows than I do in thrift stores. However, I did buy an old Camco jack knife at a thrift store yesterday for $7. I was mistaken thinking its sides were not celluloid and I had to file its spear blade's kick to lower its point into the blade well so maybe it should only have been $5. Given the excessive sharpening on those Case knives points high above the handle with blades closed is something you should look for.

Scott, I've had this knife for 30 some years. No markings. It looks to be a dead ringer for yours. 7-1/2" inches overall, 3-3/4" blade. Blade is rather thin, like a boy's knife. Cant see your snap in your pics, is it the same? Someone said it could be a Colonial but I don't know. Levine and Price mention a "Spear Cutlery" in Germany/Austria pre-1915, if that's correct, it should have a country of origin stamp. Thanks J.O'.

Went to the basement the other day and found this still etched Schrade 81004 Carpenter’s Special. Very nice knife, except for the handle shrinkage. From what I read I think it is celluloid. If it is shrinking does that mean it is off gassing also?

I'm not an expert but that black jigged material doesn't seem to cause any damage when it shrinks. Its common on old camp knives which, i have several of in various stages of shrinking, and the blades never exhibit the tell tale black corrosion in a straight line on the blade.

This is the closest looking Colonial fixed blade I have. I don't think Colonial made yours. This has a pretty thick blade. 10 inches oal, blade is 5 from tip to shoulder.

When you set it down on your work bench it probably thought it was going to get dressed up. Knice old knife and generous on your part.

The knife is in very good shape don’t want it to get ugly. The shrinkage is pretty severe. Handles have pulled away from the bolsters cracked at the pins.
