Red Bud Run as seen from the foot bridge on the 3rd Battle of Winchester (Virginia) battlefield walking trail. On September 19, 1864, the Union Army of the Shenandoah under Philip Sheridan (39,000 men) defeated the Confederate Army of the Valley under Jubal Early (12,000-14,000 men). Where the tree tops level off in the center distance, the Second Division of the Union 8th Corps (aka The Army of West Virginia) under temporary command of Colonel (future President) Rutherford B. Hayes crossed from right-to-left to assault the Confederate left flank.

Thank you--much appreciated. The 3rd Winchester Battlefield is administered by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and contains over 600 preserved acres and over 6 miles of walking trails, with over 30 interpretive markers. It's well worth the visit if in the area.
